Barton completes 5-game home series

The Barton Community College baseball team wrapped up its home opening 5-game series this past weekend with a 2-3 record after splitting games with McCook (Neb) Community College Sunday. Barton went 1-2 against Western Nebraska and is now 6-5 overall this season. The Cougars will open Jayhawk West play this weekend at Garden City in a 4-game series. Barton will be at home the opening week of March with a single game against Bethany JV and weekend series with Hutchinson on tap.

Highlights
The Cougars won the series finale Sunday over McCook (Neb) 3-2 after dropping the opener 4-1. The Cougars lost their home-opener to Western Nebraska Friday night in a single game, 9-6 in 10 innings. The Cougars then split games Saturday, winning to the opener 8-3 and losing 3-1 in the nightcap.

The Cougars received solid pitching Sunday, including four shutout innings from starter Jordan Hill. Ben French, pitching two innings in relief allowed a pair of unearned runs before giving way to Ian Smith who earned the save. Hill got the win in his first action on the mound this season. Barton took 1-0 lead in the 2nd on a Ryan Busboom single that scored Mitch Slauter. The Cougars made it 3-0 in the 3rd as Nathan Miller singled in Jordan Slade and later scored on a Clayton Garland single. Slade, Slauter and Miller each had two hits in the win.

The Cougars collected just 3 hits in the loss to start play Sunday. Barton fell behind 2-0 after the 1st and trailed 3-1 after two innings, playing from behind the entire game.

The Cougars started things Saturday on the right foot, pounding out 9 hits in the 8-3 win. The Cougars scored 4 in the 1st and 4 in the 3rd. Dylan Monroe had 3 hits while Michael Tennessen drove in two on a 2-run double in the 3rd. Miller and Slauter each scored two times while Robbie Van Cour picked up the win, going 4 1/3 innings allowing one earned run.

The Cougars had trouble hitting and fielding the ball in the nightcap, keeping Barton from the sweep Saturday. Western Nebraska scored 3 unearned runs in the win thanks to 3 Barton errors. Western scored twice in the 6th without a batted ball leaving the infield.

Barton rallied from a 4-0 deficit Friday to take a 5-4 lead in the 9-inning game. Western Nebraska tied the game in the 8th on an unearned run before scoring 4 times in the 10th to pick up the win in extra innings. Miller, Slauter and Ian Smith all collected a pair of hits with Slauter driving in 3 and Smith scoring twice.

Barton will travel to Garden City this weekend to start Jayhawk West play with a 4-game series at Williams Stadium. The teams will play a 7-inning and 9-inning game both Saturday and Sunday.
