Castagnini named Jayhawk Conference baseball player of the week

Federico Castagnini leaps high in the air on Western Nebraska’s Andy Padron stolen base in seventh inning action Sunday February 26, 2012.

Barton Community College baseball player Federico Castagnini has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week.  Castagnini, a sophomore from Verona, Italy, batted .526 for the week, had a .667 on base percentage, scored 11 runs, and drove in another 11 runs in helping to lead Barton to a perfect 6-0 week including a five-game series weekend sweep of Western Nebraska Community College. Batting near .500 for the year, Castagnini has been an integral part of Barton’s 12-1 record to start the season.

“Feddy had a great week,” said Head Coach Mike Warren.  “He was able to move runners over as well and has really worked to execute our offensive philosophy.  Feddy has been able to make the adjustment from last year when he hit second to a guy who can hit in the middle of the order and drive runs in.  He leads the team in RBI and runs scored which is what you want out of your number 3 hitter.”

Castagnini started his week with a one hit three RBI performance in Barton’s 21-11 Wednesday victory over Bethany College JV.  Over the weekend in Barton’s five game sweep over Western Nebraska, Castagnini drove in eight runs on nine hits while scoring ten runs.  He also added three stolen bases in leading the Cougars to the first five game sweep in the Coach Warren era.

For the season Castagnini is batting near .500 with twenty runs batted in and has crossed the plate nineteen times.  The Creighton University signee anchors the Cougar defense from the shortstop position and leads Barton in every major statistical category.
