Cougar baseball sweep five-game series, off to 12-1 start on season

Ryan Tracy throwing home in action against Western NebraskaWith a five-game sweep this past weekend, the Barton Community College baseball team is off to a 12-1 start, its best start since the 2005-06 season when it started 7-1.  The Cougars, who started the season 3-1 after a trip to Texas, have won ten straight including this past weekend’s sweep of Western Nebraska Community College.  Barton won 5-4 and 7-2 on Friday, 14-9 and 11-4 on Saturday, then completed the series sweep with a nine inning 7-2 victory on Sunday.  The Cougars will have the week off before starting a four game series with Hutchinson Community College at Hutchinson on Friday.  First pitch for Friday’s nine inning game will begin at 4:00 p.m. at Hutchinson’s Bud Detter Field.  The two teams will return to the diamond at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday for a seven inning doubleheader and then wrap up the series with a nine inning game at 1:00 p.m. Sunday. Highlights
Sophomore Federico Castagnini led the Barton attack as the Cougars outscored Western Nebraska 44 to 23.  Castagnini, who signed with Creighton University in the early signing period, batted .563 over the weekend scoring ten runs and driving home another eight runs.  Brett Bond and Devin Welch highlighted the Cougar pitching staff as the duo combined to only allow nine hits and two earned runs in fourteen innings pitched.
