Former MLB player and Kansas City Royals reach out to Cougar’s Skylar Hill
The cancer fight from Barton Community College baseball player Skylar Hill continues as does the support from various sources from around the country. The latest show of support comes from the Kansas City Royals baseball organization. Giving the young man from Little River, Kansas, hope and something to look forward to through weeks of chemotherapy, the Royals will be hosting Hill for Saturday’s baseball game against the Los Angeles Angels at Kauffman Stadium.
“Mitch (Webster) is a good friend of mine and former coach at Barton,” Barton baseball head coach Mike Warren said. “Once he heard about Skylar he has reached out to him wanting to do what he can for Skylar.”
Webster, a Larned native and a retired major league baseball player after thirteen seasons, is now the Midwest Regional Scouting Supervisor for the Royals. Wanting to do something for Hill, Webster spoke with Royals General Manager Dayton Moore.
A Wichita native and former player for Garden City Community College, Moore played against Coach Warren’s Cougars in the 1986 and 1987 seasons. Immediately starting a plan in motion, Moore spoke to his secretary to contact Coach Warren and Hill.
“Within moments of Mitch talking to Dayton, Dayton’s secretary Emily Penning contacted us to set something up,” said Warren.
Ahead for Hill, Coach Warren, and Hill’s close friends and supporters Jason and Shelly Schafer is a VIP trip to see the Royals play the Angels. Arriving in Kansas City on Friday, the group will get to tour the Royals Hall of Fame, Clubhouse, batting practice, and have BATS Crown Club seats behind home plate for Saturday’s game.
Diagnosed with cancer in mid-April, Hill has undergone two weeks of chemotherapy with two remaining. A two-year starting pitcher for the Cougars, Hill pitched his last game for Barton April 6 at MCC-Longview. Hill will continue his academic and hopeful athletic career next fall at Missouri Southern State University in Joplin, Missouri, as the Lions will honor Hill’s baseball scholarship signed last fall.
“Even with a positive prognosis, the process of undergoing chemo is taking a toll on him,” Warren spoke about Hill. “He’s a tough kid who will no doubt defeat cancer. Having Mitch, Dayton, and the Kansas City Royals do this for him is pretty special. It gives him hope, something to look forward to after days of treatment, and has given him a network of people that has either gone through treatments or simply there to give him support.”

Freshman Gile earns conference honors
Barton freshman Aaron Gile was recently named to the KJCCC All-Jayhawk West honorable mention baseball team. Gile was the lone Cougar to make the all-conference team as Barton finished 15-34 on the season.
Playing third base and batting in the heart of the lineup, Gile led Barton in three major offensive categories. The Lawrence, Kansas, native led the team in batting .390 on the season and .479 on-base percentage with a .627 slugging percentage by pounding out 46 hits including 5 triples and 12 doubles.
Cougars drop season finale, miss regional playoffs
Looking to end the regular season on positive note, the Barton Community College baseball team’s rally in Sunday’s series finale came up short in losing 11-7 to Hutchinson Community College at Lawson-Biggs Field. The Cougars left eleven men stranded, including two in the ninth inning, to drop its third game of the four-game series to the Blue Dragons. The loss leaves the Cougars at 10-22 in region play and 15-34 overall while Hutchinson improved to 14-18 in the region and 20-28 overall. Barton wrapped up its regular season tied with Pratt Community College for the eighth and final seed for the Region VI playoffs, with the Beavers needing one win in its four-game series at Butler Community College to hurdle the Cougars in the standings. Barton had playoff hopes yesterday as Butler won the first two games of the series but Pratt swept both games today to knock Barton from the playoffs and end the Cougars’ season.
Emotional weekend at ballpark as Cougars look to split series with Hutch on Sunday
The Barton Community College baseball had more to play for this weekend at Lawson-Biggs Field than keeping its region playoffs hopes alive. Amongst the importance of wins and losses the Cougars played for a teammate, a member of their baseball family, and the realization of life outside of the game. Riding the emotion of seeing teammate Skylar Hill throw out the first pitch of Saturday’s doubleheader, the Cougars scored nine runs in the first four innings to win game one 9-6 over Hutchinson Community College.
“In my thirty-four years of coaching,” Barton Head Coach Mike Warren said. “Skylar Hill throwing out the first pitch today with his teammates gathered around him was the most moving experience in my career.”
The Blue Dragons countered in game two scoring single runs in five of the seven innings to win 5-1 and improve to 13-18 in region play and 19-28 overall. The game two victory by Hutch coupled with Friday evening’s 8-7 victory, leaves the Cougars in desperate need to win the series finale on Sunday to keep its slim playoff hopes alive. Barton, 10-21 in region play and 15-33 overall, are tied with Pratt Community College for the eighth and final seed for the Region VI playoffs. Owning the tiebreaker over Pratt due to the Cougars taking 3-of-4 from the Beavers earlier in the season, the Cougars can better their chances with a win in Sunday’s 2:00 p.m. nine inning game. Pratt travels to Butler Community College for a four-game series on Sunday and Monday.
Support for player increases, “Strike out cancer” events approaching
As Barton Community College baseball player Skylar Hill undergoes chemotherapy for recently diagnosed cancer, the support from the community and nationwide has also began. Coach Mike Warren and the Barton baseball team invite additional support in attending “Strike Out Cancer” fundraising events during the Cougars’ April 26 weekend series against Hutchinson Community College at Lawson-Biggs Field. “Pack the Park” night will take place on Friday, April 26, with raffle ticket opportunities throughout the evening’s 6:30 p.m. nine-inning game versus the Blue Dragons. Gate admission will be $5.00 with $1.00 hot dogs to go along with numerous donated raffle items including Kansas City Royals and Colorado Rockies baseball tickets. The baseball games on Saturday, April 27, will have free gate admission with the public invited to participate in “Supper with Skylar”, a free-will donation dinner at the ball park after the conclusion of the second game. First pitch for Saturday’s seven-inning doubleheader is 2:00 p.m.
In addition to the fundraising events, the weekend series impacts each team’s future in the upcoming region playoffs. Barton, 9-19 in conference and region play, is currently tied with Pratt Community College for the eighth and final playoff position from the Western Division. Hutchinson, 11-17 in conference and region play, sits in sixth position and seeks to ensure its standing in the top eight. The teams will conclude the four-game series on Sunday with a single nine-inning game slated for 2:00 p.m.

Missed opportunities doom Cougar Baseball in loss to Brown Mackie
Stranding eleven base runners and hitting into two double plays, the Barton Community College baseball team failed to convert opportunities in losing 5-4 to Brown Mackie College Thursday evening at Lawson-Biggs Field. The non-conference loss drops the Cougars to 14-31 while Brown Mackie improves to 6-14. Barton returns to conference play on Friday in hosting Hutchinson Community College in a pivotal four-game weekend series. The Cougars, 9-19 in conference and region play, are currently tied with Pratt Community College for the eighth and final playoff position from the Western Division. Hutchinson, 11-17 in conference and region play, sits in sixth position and seeks to ensure its standing in the top eight. The teams will begin series play on Friday at Lawson-Biggs Field in a 6:30 p.m. nine-inning contest, followed by a seven-inning doubleheader on Saturday. The series concludes on Sunday with a single nine-inning game. Both Saturday and Sunday’s first-pitch slated for 2:00 p.m.
“Strike out cancer” events set for Cougar player
Coach Mike Warren and the Barton Community College baseball team invites the public to attend “Strike Out Cancer” fundraising events during the Cougar’s April 26 weekend series against Hutchinson Community College at Lawson-Biggs Field. All proceeds raised will benefit sophomore pitcher and 2011 Little River High School graduate Skylar Hill, who recently was diagnosed with cancer. Cougars sweep Sunday’s doubleheader to split weekend series
The Barton Community College baseball team bounced back from Saturday’s losses to Dodge City Community College to sweep both games against the Conquistadors on Sunday at Lawson-Biggs Field. The Cougars scored three early runs to get the separation the needed for the 6-4 win in the first game then pounded the Conqs in game two 14-2. With the pair of Jayhawk Conference victories, Barton improves to 9-15 in conference play and 14-26 overall while Dodge drops to 17-11 in conference play and 28-18 overall. The Cougars will hit the road for two mid-week games before returning to conference play on Saturday. Barton will take on Brown Mackie College at Junction City’s Rathert Stadium at 7:00 p.m. Wednesday before traveling to Hesston College on Thursday.
Cougar Baseball loses doubleheader to Dodge City
The Barton Community College baseball team dropped both Jayhawk Conference games Saturday at Lawson-Biggs Field to Dodge City Community College. The Cougars scored three in the fourth to take a one run lead in the first game but surrendered two runs in the fifth to lose 6-5. Holding a five run advantage in the second game, Barton gave up twelve unanswered including seven in the top of the ninth inning to lose 14-7. Barton falls to 7-15 in conference play and 12-26 overall while Dodge improves to 17-9 in conference play and 28-16 overall. The teams will meet again on Sunday for another doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Lawson-Biggs Field.
Heartbreak continues as Cougar Baseball lose two on last at-bats
Day two at Lee’s Summit, Missouri, started much like the first as the Barton Community College baseball team lost a heartbreaker in the last inning of game one’s doubleheader. To add insult to injury the Cougars failed to hold a seven run advantage in game two leading to its second consecutive last-at-bat loss as MCC-Longview swept Sunday’s games 4-3 and 13-12. With the non-conference sweep at the hands of the Lakers, Barton limps home with a 12-24 record on the season while MCC-Longview improves to 19-13. The Cougars will have some time away from the diamond before hosting Dodge City Community College for a weekend series April 13-14. First pitch for each day’s doubleheader at Lawson-Biggs Field slated for 1:00 p.m.
Both losses overshadowed a couple of solid performances for the Cougars. Game one starter Brett Bond struck out eight and surrendered only four hits in leaving with the no-decision. Tito Andino nearly hit for the cycle in game two going 4-for-4 with three RBI's just missing the cycle as his sixth inning blast came up short.but collecting his second triple of the game.
Game One
Braxton Byfield’s single to right field scoring Aaron Gile began a three-run fourth inning for the Cougars. After a Tito Andino strike out, Scott Tyler delivered a two-out triple to center to score Dylan Turpin and Gile giving Barton a 3-0 lead.
Starter Brett Bond sailed through the game’s first five innings allowing only two hits and striking out seven batters. The Lakers’ Stephen Montisano led off the sixth with a single to right field to key the start of a three-run inning. After a Jamie Graeser fielder’s choice, Bond hit Jared Yarberry then Dylan Farrell reached on a error by Aaron Gile to load the bases. Bond came back with a strikeout of Brandon Dulin but then plunked Jared Gage to force in the first Laker run. Within a strike of Welch getting out of the inning, Matt Estes delivered a 2-2 single to right field to score Yarberry and Farrell. Devin Welch relieved Bond to strike out Myles Edwards but MCC-Longview had battled back to tie the game at three apiece.
After a 1-2-3 top of the seventh for the Cougars, Montisano was again the start of the Lakers scoring getting a one out single to right and advancing to second two pitches later on a Welch wild pitch. Getting a Graeser fly out to left field, Welch and Yarberry battled to a full count until Yarberry delivered his two-out game winning RBI to right field scoring Montisano.
Welch took the loss for the Cougars dropping to 0-2 on the season in eleven appearances. Bond, who was looking for his first win of the season, finished with eight strikeouts with no walks while scattering four hits and giving up three unearned runs. Matt Ritchie went the distance for MCC-Longview to improve to 2-1 on the season giving up only four hits and picking off two Cougar baserunners at first base.
Game Two
The Cougars jumped on the Lakers for five first inning runs highlighted by Tito Andino’s two RBI triple to center. Alex King had led off the inning scoring on a Dylan Turpin single to center to give the Cougars the 1-0 lead. After a Braxton Byfield fielder’s choice to score Erik Benson who had drawn a walk two batter earlier, Andino drove a 3-2 pitch to the centerfield wall increasing the lead to four. A Scott Tyler single to right scored Andino to cap the Barton five run inning.
Jared Yarberry’s one out triple to center helped the Lakers score one in the first scoring on Brandon Dulin’s single to right.
King led off the Barton second inning with a double to left then was followed by Pete Ruiz drawing a walk. After an Erik Benson sacrifice moved King and Ruiz, Aaron Gile doubled to center to plate two as Barton increased their lead to 7-1.
The Cougars added another in the third as Andino set the stage leading off the inning with a double to right field, his second multi-base hit of the game in as many at-bats. After a Tyler ground out advanced Andino to third, Nate Train came through with the RBI sacrifice fly to push the lead out to 8-1.
MCC-Longview chipped into the Cougar lead in the home half of the third as Dylan Farrell tripled home Yarberry then scored on a Dulin line drive to left field.
The game’s momentum shifted further in the fourth as the Cougars were unable to shut the door as the Lakers struck for three runs with two outs to narrow the Barton lead to 8-6.
Following an Andino single and Tyler reaching courtesy of a Laker error, Train grounded out to shortstop allowing Andino to score to increase the Cougar lead back out to 9-6.
Michael Johnson replaced Barton starter Andrew Ferguson for the fifth inning getting a leadoff strikeout to begin the inning. It would be the last out by Johnson as the freshman lefthander gave up four consecutive walks to force in a run and reduce the lead to 9-7.
Blaine Hill replaced Johnson and was greeted by a Yarberry three-run double giving the Lakers their first lead of the game. After two wild pitches allowing Yarberry to score and a hit batsman, Barton skipper Mike Warren again went to the bullpen bringing in Michael Turner to end the threat and get out of the inning down 11-9.
The Cougars benefitted in the top of the sixth drawing consecutive walks by Benson and Gile then capitalizing on a Laker error to cut the deficit to one. Byfield then followed with a sacrifice fly to score Gile tying the game at eleven apiece. Andino, who came to the plate needing a homerun to hit for the cycle, nearly made it happen hitting the first pitch he saw off the centerfield fence for a RBI triple to regain the lead for the Cougars at 12-11.
MCC-Longview would answer the Cougars tying the game in the home half as Stephen Montisano’s single up the middle drove home Ian Barker who tripled to center one batter earlier.
With the Cougars going down in order in the top of the seventh, Farrell led off the Laker seventh with a double to left field. Intentionally walking Dulin to set up the force, Turner then walked Jared Gage on four pitches causing Coach Warren to bring in Devin Welch to close the door. Welch struck out the first batter he faced but the Cougars couldn’t prevent a Tanner Homan fielder’s choice from scoring Farrell with the game winning run.
Turner took the loss for Barton dropping to 1-2 on the season pitching 1.2 innings giving up two runs despite striking out three. Brett Valentine’s one inning of no hit work earned his first win of the year for the Lakers.
Cougar Baseball drop two on the road to MCC-Longview
A two-out single in the bottom of the seventh in game one propelled the MCC-Longview baseball team to a doubleheader sweep of Barton Community College Saturday in Lee’s Summit, Missouri. The Cougars held a 2-1 lead to the bottom of the seventh but surrendered a two-out two RBI single to drop the first game 3-2. The Lakers carried the momentum in game two scoring four in the first and ten in the third to win 15-4. With the two non-conference losses, Barton drops to 12-24 on the season while the Lakers improve to 17-13. The two teams will engage in day two of doubleheader action on Sunday beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Game One
An Erik Benson two out single to left field scoring Pete Ruiz gave the Cougars a third inning 1-0 lead. Dylan Farrell led off the MCC-Longview fourth inning with a triple to right field, tying the game on a Brandon Dulin sacrifice fly.
Barton responded in the fifth as Erik Benson scored from first base on a Jace Bowman double to left field.
Giving up two walks to begin the bottom of the seventh, Craig Nicks nearly held the Lakers at bay getting a sacrifice out and a strike-out looking. Nicks then walked Farrell setting up a Dulin two-out two RBI single up the middle giving the Lakers the come-from-behind 3-2 win.
Nicks took the loss for the Cougars pitching the last 1.2 innings to fall to 1-4 on the season. Ryan Spry pitched the last 2.2 innings for the Lakers to earn his first win on the season.
Game Two
The Lakers scored four unearned runs in the first inning, all coming with two outs against Barton hurler Skylar Hill. After a three-and-out second inning, MCC-Longview chased Hill and three other Cougar pitchers by putting up ten runs in taking a commanding 14-0 lead after three innings.
Aaron Gile led off the Barton fourth with a single to right field. Dylan Turpin and Nate Train followed with walks then after a Tito Andino strikeout, Caleb Cherryholmes’ bases loaded single to right field gave the Cougars their first run.
MCC-Longview answered in the home half behind two doubles to left field, a Brett Graham double to lead off the inning then a batter later, an Ian Barker double to score Graham.
Barton tried to mount a comeback in the fifth inning started by a one-out double by Jace Bowman followed by Gile’s third hit of the day, a single to right field. The Cougars would score three in the inning but not enough as the Lakers held on for the 15-4 run rule victory.
Hill dropped to 1-2 on the season giving up four earned runs as MCC-Longview scored ten runs in chasing him out of the game in the third inning scoring a total of ten runs. Thomas Boucher earned the win for the Lakers pitching 4.0 innings of three-hit ball to improve to 2-0 on the season.
Butler holds off Barton in controversial play to win Saturday’s game two and take weekend series
Featuring solid pitching from both teams in Saturday’s second game, a ninth inning rally by the Barton Community College baseball team fell just short in losing 3-2 to Butler Community College at El Dorado’s McDonald Stadium. The Grizzlies captured both of Friday’s games winning 4-0 and 7-1 as Barton could only muster nine hits in the two games. The Barton bats came alive in game one on Saturday pounding out seventeen hits in winning 13-9. Losing three-of-four in the weekend series, Barton drops to 12-20 on the season and 7-13 in conference play while Butler improves to 13-11 overall and 9-7 in Jayhawk play. Barton will again take to the road next weekend traveling to Lee’s Summit, Missouri, to take on MCC-Longview. First pitch for Saturday’s doubleheader at the Laker’s field set for 2:00 p.m. while Sunday’s doubleheader set to begin at 1:00 p.m.
Friday Game One
Butler scored three runs in the third inning on only one hit as the Cougars committed two of their four errors on the day. The Grizzlies added an insurance run in the fifth inning courtesy of a hit batsman to start the inning followed by a fielding error leading to a sacrifice fly.
The Cougars outhit the Grizzlies six to five on the day as Aaron Coombs led Barton with the only multi-hit day going 2-for-3. Coombs and Aaron Gile both hit doubles but the Cougars stranded seven runners on base compared to Butler only stranding four.
Brett Tunnell pitched a complete game five-hitter but received no run support in taking the loss to drop to 2-3 on the season. Brad Day was equally impressive for the Grizzlies improving to 2-0 on the season with his six-hit complete game shutout as Butler won 4-0.
Friday Game Two
Alex King led off the game with a single to right field setting the stage for an Aaron Gile sacrifice fly to give the Cougars their lone run on the day.
Butler’s Brandon Taylor settled in after the first and was masterful on the mound improving to 2-0 on the season striking out ten and allowing only one hit in six innings of work.
Butler gave Taylor all the runs he needed scoring one in the first and two in the second to build a 3-0 lead. The Grizzlies put the game away in the fifth scoring three runs followed by an insurance run in the seventh to win 7-1.
Skylar Hill took the loss for the Cougars working 6.2 innings giving up eleven hits and five earned runs to drop to 1-1 on the season.
Saturday Game One
The Cougars went wild at the plate to begin Saturday’s game one as five out of the first six batters hit for extra bases in Barton’s seven run first inning. Alex King led off the inning with a double to left field then was followed by an Erik Benson triple to right field and a Jace Bowman double to center field. After an Aaron Gile groundout, Dylan Turpin and Braxton Byfield went back-to-back with doubles as the Cougars held an early 4-0 lead. Great Bend freshman Mitch Kottas got in on the hit parade with his single to right field scoring on Scott Tyler’s single to center. King picked up his second hit of the inning with a single up the middle allowing Tyler to score for the 7-0 Barton lead.
Butler got one back in the home half as leadoff hitter Levi Parker drew a walk then stole second base. After a Barton fielding error advanced Parker, an Evan Koehler ground out scored the Grizzlies first inning run.
The two teams would score seven runs combined in the next two innings as Barton held a 10-5 lead after three innings of play. A Gile double to center field in the second inning and Tyler’s third inning homerun to right field helped the Cougars score three while the Grizzlies countered with two in each of the second and third innings.
The Grizzlies cut into the Barton lead in the fifth getting a Brandon Taylor two-run homerun to key a three run inning to trail the Cougars 10-8.
After a King double led off the sixth, Gile came through with a two-out single up the middle as Barton increased its lead back to 11-8.
The Cougars added insurance runs in the seventh as Tyler hit his second homerun to right field in the game scoring Byfield to give the Cougars a 13-8 lead.
Despite giving up a run in the seventh, Devin Welch pitched 1.2 innings striking out three of the seven batters he faced in earning his first save of the season in preserving the 13-9 win.
Andrew Ferguson picked up the victory for the Cougars improving to 3-2 on the season pitching two innings of one-hit ball with two strikeouts despite giving up three runs. Rolfs took his first loss of the season to drop to 2-1 on the season for the Grizzlies giving up six of the Cougars seven runs in the first inning and only recording one out.
Saturday Game Two
Butler got all the runs they needed in the first two innings, scoring one in the first and two in the second.
Barton’s Brett Bond and Butler’s Greg Houser locked in a pitcher’s dual for most of the game, combining for eleven strikeouts and thirteen hits. Bond, who dropped to 0-5 on the season, pitched 7.1 innings scattering nine hits and striking out four. Improving to 2-3 on the season, Houser only allowed three hits in his seven innings of work striking out seven Cougars along the way.
The game got interesting in the ninth as the Cougars began to rally against the Butler relief pitcher Trever Ezell. After a Braxton Byfield ground out to start the inning, Pete Ruiz walked then advanced to third on Oscar “Tito” Andino’s double to center field. Andre Vieyra then came off the bench to pinch hit and promptly singled to center scoring Ruiz. The Cougars looked to be on the verge of a big inning but Alex King was called out after appearing to beat out an infield single. Andino scored on the play but left the Cougars down to their final out with the tying run at second base. Ezell came back to induce a Erik Benson groundout to third base and Butler escaped with the 3-2 win.
Cougars bust out the bats in twenty-eight hit two-game sweep
Needing an offensive breakout to awake from an offensive slump, the Barton Community College baseball team pounded out twenty-eight hits in a doubleheader sweep of the Bethany College Junior Varsity squad Wednesday at the Philip Anderson Baseball Field in Lindsborg, Kansas. The Cougars connected on fourteen hits in each game in winning 15-3 in the first contest and 9-4 in the second game. Barton improves to 11-17 on the season and stands at 6-10 in conference play going into the weekend’s conference four game series at Butler Community College. First pitch for Friday’s doubleheader at McDonald Stadium in El Dorado scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Game One
Barton scored two in the first inning to break a streak of seventeen consecutive scoreless innings dating back to the second game of last week-end’s four-game series against Cloud County Community College. Alex King led off the game with a single to center then scored two batters later on a Dylan Turpin sacrifice fly. Nathan Train followed Turpin with a single to center scoring Erik Benson giving the Cougars a 2-0 early lead.
Oscar “Tito” Andino led off the Barton third inning with a double to right field, scoring on Train’s groundout to shortstop.
Barton increased their lead to 5-0 in the top of the fourth getting a sacrifice fly by Diego McCollum and an Andino RBI single to center.
After Bethany scored one in the home half of the fourth, the Cougars broke the game open in the sixth inning with ten runs. Andino and Turpin each had two singles in the inning as Barton pounded out seven singles and a double while taking advantage of three Swede errors in taking the 15-1 lead. Bethany pushed across two runs in the bottom of the inning as Barton took game one 15-3.
Andrew Ferguson picked up the win for the Cougars to even his season mark at 2-2 pitching two hitless and scoreless innings.
Game Two
In game two it was Bethany with the early advantage taking a 2-0 lead in the first. The Cougars responded with three in the second as Braxton Byfield and Jace Bowman led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Caleb Cherryholmes sacrifice fly scored Byfield while Mitch Kottas’ RBI double drove home Bowman. Kottas scored two batters later as King’s single to left field put the Cougars out front at 4-3.
The Andino-Turpin duo, who combined for ten hits and ten RBIs in the doubleheader, struck again in the top of the third as Andino’s lead-off triple to left field was rewarded with Turpin’s single up the middle giving Barton a 4-2 lead.
After each team had a couple of scoreless innings, the Swedes cut into the Barton lead getting one in the bottom of the fifth. The Cougars responded in the top of the sixth as Coombs led off the inning with a single then advanced on an errant throw by Bethany pitcher Cory Skerce. King’s single up the middle scored Coombs then reached home on Andino’s RBI double to left field.
Bethany loaded the bases in the home half, getting a one-out single by Matt Gabrielson, but Barton hurler Michael Turner induced an inning ending double-play to preserve the 6-4 lead.
Barton increased their lead in the seventh and final inning on three hits, the first coming from Andre Vieyra. Batting .440 on the season but seeing limited action the last three weeks due to injury, Vieyra delivered a pinch hit one-out single to right field before giving way to pinch runner Diego McCollum. After stealing second base, McCollum scored on a King single to left giving Barton a three-run advantage.
A Benson fielder’s choice scored Coombs then was followed with an RBI Andino triple to center, his sixth run batted in on the day, as Barton controlled a 9-4 lead to the bottom of the seventh.
Craig Nicks struck out the last two Swede batters to end the game and help starting pitcher Michael Johnson improve to 2-2 on the season.
For the series Cougar shortstop Andino was 7-for-10 with two doubles and two singles while knocking in six runs.
Pitching performances not enough as Cougars swept in series
Two solid pitching performances were not enough for the Barton Community College baseball team Friday at Lawson-Biggs Field as Cloud County Community College put together enough offense to record a pair of Jayhawk Conference victories. The Thunderbirds managed only five hits in game one but won 5-0 then collected ten in the nine-inning second game to win 3-0 to complete the series sweep over the Cougars. Barton, who has lost seven straight including a seventeen inning scoring drought, falls to 6-10 in conference play and 9-17 overall while Cloud improves to 5-7 in conference and 12-14 overall. The Cougars will step out of conference play on Tuesday in hosting the junior varsity squad from Bethany College. First pitch for the doubleheader at Lawson-Biggs Field scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
Game One
The Cougars got complete game pitching performances in both games, the first coming from sophomore Brett Tunnell. Throwing 115 pitches, Tunnell limited the Thunderbird bats to only five hits while striking out seven in seven innings of work but fell to 2-2 on the season.
Sophomore Dylan Turpin went 2-for-3 from the plate in finishing as the only player for either team to collect a multi-hit performance.
A two-out double by Cloud’s Austin White got the Thunderbirds on the board in the second but a three run third broke the game open. Cloud tacked on another in the fourth to secure the win while also holding the Cougars at bay as no Barton runner reached past second base. Caleb Blumer went the distance for Cloud with a five-hitter of his own while recording two strikeouts.
Game Two
Sophomore Skylar Hill took his first loss of the season to drop to 1-1 in pitching his fourth 100-plus pitch game. Hill scatter ten hits and struck out eleven in nine innings surrendering a single run in the fourth and two in the sixth.
Trevor Rinne was equally impressive for the Thunderbirds limiting the Cougars to eight hits and striking out three.
A pair of freshman led the Cougars in hitting as Eric Benson got three of Barton’s hits in his five at bats while Braxton Byfield went 2-for-4.
Cougars outscored in pair of Jayhawk losses to Cloud
The Barton Community College baseball team dropped both Jayhawk Conference games Thursday at Lawson-Biggs Field to Cloud County Community College. The Cougars scored two in the bottom of the seventh in game one to force extra innings only to have Cloud hang up four in the top of the eighth to win 11-7. Cloud put game two away scoring six runs in both the fifth and sixth innings to win 13-6. Barton falls to 6-8 in conference play and 9-15 overall while Cloud improves to 3-7 in conference and 10-14 overall. Weather permitting the teams will meet again on Friday for another doubleheader beginning at 3:00 p.m.
Struggling Cougars drop two at conference leader
Different day and different opponent, the Barton Community College baseball team was silent at the plate in getting shutout for the second straight game. In game one of Saturday’s doubleheader at Colby Community College, the Trojans scored one in each of the second and third innings then run-ruled the Cougars in fifth getting eight runs to win 10-0. Colby again used a big inning in game two getting four in the sixth inning to win 6-3. With the pair of losses Barton sees their conference mark drop to .500 at 5-5 and 8-10 overall while Colby sits atop the conference standings at 8-2 and 16-5 overall. The teams will meet again on Sunday for another doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
Cougars land Hutchinson multi-sport standout for 2013 season
Head Coach Mike Warren recently announced the commitment from Hutchinson High School’s Trevor Turner to join the Cougars for the 2013 season. Turner, a multi-sport athlete for the Salt Hawks, is expected to play outfield for the Cougars while also exploring options to play basketball while at Barton.
“Trevor Turner is a great fit for our program!” said Coach Warren. “He has the mental make-up we look for and is very athletic!”
Missing his junior season of basketball and baseball due to a knee injury suffered in the state football championship game, Turner batted .321 as a sophomore driving in fourteen RBIs. Of his twenty-five hits, eight were for extra-bases.
On the football field Turner was a three-year starter at quarterback with a 31-7 record and helped lead Hutchinson to the 2011 Class 5A state championship his junior season. In his senior season the Salt Hawks fell in the 6A title game and in his first season as a sophomore helped lead his team to the 5A semifinals.
“Trevor has competed at the highest level in three sports and knows how to discipline himself and what it takes to be successful in each,” said Warren. “He will have an immediate impact on our program in the outfield and we are looking forward to having Trevor in our baseball family!”
Disastrous third inning dooms Cougars in loss to Pratt
Surrendering six runs in the third inning, the Barton Community College baseball team fell 10-0 in a game-shortened seven innings Wednesday to Pratt Community College at Jud Stanion Field. Trailing 1-0 into the third, the Cougars unraveled walking three batters, hitting three batters, and aiding the Beavers further with two fielding errors. Pratt’s Colton Lorance kept the Cougar hitters off-balance all night surrendering only a Jace Bowman sixth inning single up the middle. Despite the loss, the Cougars took 3-of-4 from the Beavers in the four-game series to run their conference mark to 5-3 and 8-8 overall while Pratt stands at 3-5 in conference and 5-8 overall. Barton will travel to Colby Community College for conference games on Saturday and Sunday. First pitch for each day’s doubleheader scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
Cougars rally from eight-run deficit to pick up conference road win
The Barton Community College baseball team rallied from an eight run deficit Tuesday to defeat Pratt Community College 17-13 at Pratt’s Jud Stanion Field. The Cougars outscored Pratt fourteen to two in the final four innings to get the win, improving their Jayhawk Conference record to 5-2 and 8-7 overall while dropping Pratt to 2-5 and 4-8. The teams will meet again on Wednesday in a nine inning contest set for 4:00 p.m. at Jud Stanion Field.
Pratt answered Barton’s run in the top of the first with two of their own in the home half. The Beavers then put up six runs in the second while the Cougars responded with two in the top of the third. Getting three in the bottom of the third, the Beavers took a seemingly commanding 11-3 to the fourth.
Barton scored nine runs in the fourth, three coming off an Aaron Gile homerun to cut the deficit to 11-8. Back-to-back walks by Dylan Turpin and Nathan Train set up Pete Ruiz’ RBI single to left. Jace Bowman then followed with a RBI single to right and Barton had drawn to within one.
Alex King, the reigning conference player of the week, tied the game at twelve despite hitting into a double-play. Erik Benson completed the Cougar comeback on a single to up the middle as the Cougars roared back to take a 12-11 lead. Pratt answered in the home half on a sacrifice fly but stranded the bases full.
The fifth produced some wild Pratt pitching as Barton’s first three batters reached base after getting hit at the plate. The Cougars capitalized to take a 15-12 lead getting a two RBI single by Bowman and an Aaron Coombs sac bunt.
Barton tacked on single runs in both the sixth and seventh on a Turpin fielder’s choice and Bowman single and score on a passed ball.
Pratt managed to get a two-out run in the bottom of the seventh but left the bases loaded.
Brett Tunnell picked up the win for Barton improving his record to 1-1 on the season.
Barton’s King named Jayhawk Conference baseball player of the week
Barton Community College baseball player Alex King has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week. The sophomore from Topeka, Kansas, put together six solid games batting .500 in the leadoff position helping the Cougars to a 4-2 record to start the conference season including a four-game split with conference leading Seward County Community College this past weekend. King went 11-for-22 with three doubles and a triple for a .727 slugging percentage drawing six walks for a .621 on base percentage while also stealing four bases. From his center field position King was just as solid recording thirteen putouts in thirteen opportunities.
For the season King averages .353 as the Cougars have won seven out of their last ten games to even their overall record to 7-7. Barton travels to Pratt Community College on Tuesday for seven-inning conference game then returns again Wednesday for a nine-inning game. Solid pitching leads Cougar Baseball to series split with Seward
Playing six games in three days, the Barton Community College baseball team needed and received solid pitching to earn a series split with Seward County Community College this past weekend. A day after sweeping Pratt Community College, the Cougars were faced with cooling off the hot Seward team with the wind blowing out to left field at Lawson-Biggs Field. Barton lost the first two contests on Friday 12-10 and 15-7 but solid pitching on Saturday by two freshman earned the Cougars’ split getting 5-4 and 10-0 decisions. Craig Nicks starved off Seward in game one pitching a complete game eleven strikeout performance while Andrew Ferguson pitched a complete game four-hit shutout to clinch the series split. Leadoff batter Alex King set the table for the Cougar offense as the sophomore from Topeka batted .533 for the series with two doubles and a triple. Barton moves into second place in the conference standings at 4-2 and 7-7 overall while Seward sits atop the standings at 5-3 and 11-12 overall. The Cougars will head to Pratt Community College on Tuesday for seven-inning conference game then return again Wednesday for a nine-inning game. First pitch for both games slated at 4:00 p.m. at Pratt’s Jud Stanion Field.
Friday (Game One)
The Cougars scored three in the bottom of the first behind a single by Dylan Turpin and doubles from Alex King and Tito Andino. The Saints countered with three hits of their own in the top of the second getting back-to-back doubles from Alex Scanlan and Bret Lewis followed by a single by Reed Thompson.
Barton increased its lead back to two in the third inning when Turpin singled home Erik Benson who led off the inning with a walk.
The Saints broke the game open in the fourth and sixth inning scoring nine runs, six coming from the bat of Troy Owen who hit two three-run homeruns, one in the fourth and one in the sixth. Barton managed to sandwich a run in the fifth behind consecutive singles by Scott Tyler and Jace Bowman followed by an Aaron Coombs RBI fielder’s choice to third.
After Seward tacked on another run in the top of the seventh on three consecutive singles by Diego Cruz, Johnny Griffith, and Kevin Hull, the Cougars launched one more rally to attempt to tie. Barton scored five in the inning drawing two walks, two hit batsman, and a two-run single by King. With the bases loaded and no outs, Saint’s pitcher Griffith struck out two of the next three batters to preserve the Seward 12-10 win.
Garret Smith pitched one inning for the Saints to get the win despite giving up four runs and three walks. Brett Bond took the loss giving up five runs in 3.2 innings of work.
Friday (Game Two)
Seward struck for four runs in the first two innings, two RBI coming from Bryson Allen who homered in the first and singled in the second. Barton’s King, who would go 4-for-4 in the game, led off the third with a single then stole second and third base before Aaron Gile’s two-out triple drove King home.
Getting singles from Griffith and Allen and an RBI double from Keenan Hall, the Saints pushed their lead back to five getting two runs in in the top of the fourth. The Cougars countered with three in the home half getting singles by Bowman and King and doubles by Coombs and Erik Benson.
Eight runs in the Seward fifth put the game away as the Saints pounded out seven hits including doubles by Scanlan, Cruz, and Hall and a two-run homerun by Bret Lewis.
Barton scored an unearned run in the seventh and another in the eighth behind a Nathan Train RBI single scoring King. Seward got their final run in the top of the eighth courtesy of a Griffith RBI double.
Austin King got the win for the Saints pitching five innings with eight hits and four earned runs but struck out eight. Brett Tunnell took the loss for Baron giving up six runs in four innings of work with five strikeouts.
Saturday (Game One)
Two errors led to two first inning runs then Griffith tacked on another in the second with a leadoff homerun to give the Saints the early 3-0 lead.
Barton scored one in third after King tripled to left then scored on a Benson ground out. The Cougars would tie the game in the fifth as Bowman led off the inning then scored on a King single who then scored later on an Andino sac bunt.
Seward regained the lead in the sixth as Griffith tripled to right field then scored one batter later on Cruz’s single to left. Coombs delivered the tying hit in the home half of the inning on a two-out double to score Braxson Byfield.
After winning pitcher Craig Nicks got the Saints out in order in the top of the seventh, the Cougars went to work for the win in the bottom half. Benson got the Cougars going with a leadoff single to left center. After an Andino sac bunt moved Benson to second and a Turpin walk, Byfield popped up in the Bermuda triangle between three Saints’ infielders and a hustling Benson scored from second base for the winning run as Byfield reach first base safely.
Nicks went the distance for the Cougars earning the win striking out eleven batters and giving up six hits and two earned runs. Johnny Griffith took the loss for the Saints pitching the last inning and a third with three hits and surrendering the one unearned run.
Saturday (Game Two)
The Cougars wasted no time capitalizing on the momentum from game one. Barton scored ten runs in the first four innings chasing Seward starter Keenan Hall from the game in just the third inning.
Barton got four runs in the first inning with two outs on back-to-back singles by Andino and Gile and consecutive walks by Turpin and Train. The final blow came from Tyler’s triple to center scoring Gile, Turpin, and Train.
Barton again came through with two-outs in the second as Benson reached via being hit by pitch then stole second to set up Andino’s RBI single up the middle.
The Cougars tacked on another run in the third getting two hits in the inning but earning the run coming from a Coombs walk.
Barton put the game away in the fourth scoring four runs on only two hits. Gile’s RBI double to center scoring Benson and Coombs single to left center scoring Tyler accounted for two while Train’s RBI double-play scored a third. The Cougars also scored an unearned run on a Saints wild pitch.
Andrew Ferguson gave the Cougars consecutive complete game performances in giving up only four hits and no walks while striking out three. Hall took the Seward loss after 2.1 innings giving up six runs on six hits while walking two and hitting two Barton hitters.

Cougars rally for four in the seventh, sweep doubleheader over Pratt
Offense in the first game followed by solid pitching in the second game, the Barton Community College baseball team opened the 2013 Jayhawk Conference season Thursday with a doubleheader sweep of Pratt Community College. Due to a location change because of wet field conditions in Pratt, the two games were played at Barton’s Lawson-Biggs Field with Barton playing the visitor role for the doubleheader. The Cougars rallied for four runs in the top of the seventh to win game one 13-12 then got eight innings of solid pitching from Skylar Hill to win game two 10-7. Barton improves to 5-5 on the season and 2-0 in conference play while Pratt drops to 2-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference. The Cougars will return to the diamond on Friday in hosting Seward County Community College. The 9-10 Saints opened conference play earlier this week winning 3-of-4 against Butler Community College. Game time for Friday’s doubleheader is 4:00 p.m. at Lawson-Biggs Field with the same two teams playing again on Saturday for a 1:00 p.m. doubleheader.
Barton baseball splits twinbill with MCC-Longview
Much like other schools in Kansas, the Barton Community College baseball hadn’t seen a non-snow covered field in almost two weeks. Friday the Cougars were able to fit a couple of games into the schedule traveling to Garden City and splitting a doubleheader against MCC-Longview. The Cougars captured game one 7-3 but fell in the second game 7-4. With the split, Barton moves to 3-5 on the season while MCC-Longview is 2-2. The Cougars will head to Pratt Community College on Tuesday for seven-inning conference game then return again Wednesday for a nine-inning game. First pitch for both games slated at 4:00 p.m. at Pratt’s Jud Stanion Field.
Barton baseball sweeps Southeast in walk-off extra inning fashion
After easily winning game one 12-4, the Barton Community College baseball team needed extra innings to get a walk-off 6-5 ninth inning victory to sweep Southeast Community College Saturday at Lawson-Biggs Field. With the victories coming on the Cougars’ home opener, Barton improves to 2-4 on the season while Southeast drops to 1-4. The Cougars will host another school from the state of Nebraska next weekend in a five-game series against Western Nebraska Community College. First pitch for Friday and Saturday’s doubleheader, as well as, for Sunday’s nine-inning game is slated for 1:00 p.m.
Game One
The Cougars’ Tito Andino and Andre Vieyra knocking back-to-back triples ignited a ten run first inning off of Southeast’s Nicholas Farleigh. Additional hits by Aaron Gile, Scott Tyler, Aaron Coombs, Alex King, and Andino to go along with a Vieyra double and Gile triple accounted for nine hits total in the inning to go along with three Southeast errors.
After a leadoff walk by reliever Brett Tunnell to begin the third, a passed ball and fielding error helped get the Storm on the board. A subsequent RBI single by Dylan Oberembt scored the second run of the inning as the Storm scored two runs on one hit and an error.
With Tunnell still on the mound for the fourth, the Storm’s Mitch Scheuler led off the inning with a double. Tunnell then struck out Creighton Wilke and induced a Nick Marcuzzo fly out to center. Dalton Dreifurst then singled home Schueler to narrow the Barton lead to 12-3.
Wilke led off the Storm sixth with a solo shot to right field to account for Southeast’s final run.
Blaine Hill got the win for Barton pitching two innings of no-hit ball as the freshman from Manhattan, Kansas, struck out two of the seven batters he faced. Farleigh took the loss for Southeast giving up ten runs with only three earned in going 4.1 innings with five strikeouts.
Game Two
Southeast struck for one in the top of the first on Barton starter Brett Bond scoring the run courtesy of an error and passed ball. The Cougars responded in the home half as Andino singled and stole second base to set the stage for a Braxton Byfield RBI single. After Gile’s fielder’s choice moved Byfield to second, Turpin doubled to center field giving the Cougars a 2-1 advantage after the first.
After a scoreless second inning, Southeast’s Tandon Dorn led off the third drawing a walk followed by a Danny Regan double against Barton’s new pitcher Skylar Hill. The Storm put on the bunt play and Trevor Usher beat out the play scoring Dorn from third. Usher then stole second but Hill induced an Oberembt ground out to get the first out of the inning. After a Scheuler base on balls, Wilke deliverd a two RBI single to right field to reclaim a 4-2 Storm lead.
Three errors and a hit-by-pitch helped Barton narrow the gap to one in the home half but Southeast responded by pushing a two-out run across to increase the lead back to two.
Coombs led off the Barton sixth by beating out a perfectly placed bunt down the third base line. After a King strikeout, Andino singled to place the game-winning run at the plate. The Storm’s Cody Valdez then got Byfield out on an infield pop-up setting up Gile to the plate with two-outs. After a 3-for-4 first game, Gile tripled to center field to get his only hit of game two in delivering the big hit to tie the game at five.
Scoreless for the next three-and-a-half innings, Benson led off the Barton ninth with a double to left center. Coombs then reached on a fielder’s choice which moved Benson to third base with no outs in the inning. Struggling throughout the day at the plate, the Cougars’ leadoff batter King also chose an opportune time to get his first hit of the game. Driving a single up the middle against the drawn in infield, the Storm’s second baseman Dreifurst made a valiant dive to stop the ball but couldn’t come up with the throw home as Benson crossed the plate for the winning run.
Freshman Spencer Anderson picked up his first win as a Cougar pitching the last three innings allowing three hits and striking out three. James McCarty took the loss as he also pitched the final three innings striking out five with his only hits allowed coming in the ninth.
Tito Andino had a big day setting up the Cougars’ scoring going 5-for-8 with a stolen base and two triples batting in the number two slot. Aaron Gile led the Barton RBI production with four coming on three triples. As a team the Cougars pounded out nine extra base hits on twenty-four hits. The Barton pitching staff, after struggling last weekend in Odessa, performed much better as eight pitchers took the mound in the two-game series.
Cougars drops four in Texas to open ’13 season
The Barton Community College baseball team opened its 2013 season this weekend in Odessa, Texas, dropping four games to host Odessa College. Unlike the start to last season when the Cougars took three-of-four from the Wranglers, the Cougars surrendered two games late in innings to return home without a victory. Playing doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday, the Cougars lost game one on Saturday 5-4 after leading 4-0 into the fourth then was blasted in game two 15-0. The Cougars built a five-run lead in Sunday’s first game but couldn’t keep up with the Odessa firepower in losing 17-7. In the series finale Barton surrendered a two-run lead into the sixth before losing 10-9. The Cougars will have the week off from competition before their home opener on Saturday versus Southeast Community College. First pitch of the doubleheader is 2:00 p.m. at Lawson-Biggs Field.
Game One (Saturday)
Sophomore Aaron Gile gave Barton the early lead blasting a solo leadoff homerun to center field. The Cougars increased the lead to four on sophomore Dylan Turpin’s two-out three RBI double to left field.
Getting four innings of shutout pitching from starter Brett Tunnell and an inning from Devin Welch, the Cougar bullpen failed to hold the lead in the last two innings. Giving up two in the bottom of the sixth, the Wranglers scored three in the home half of the seventh to steal the 5-4 victory.
Game Two (Saturday)
Odessa exploded for twelve runs in the second inning then added three more in the third in route to the game shortened five inning 15-0 victory. The Wrangler pitching staff was equally impressive as Andre Vieyra’s leadoff single in the fourth inning was the lone Cougar hit of the game.
Game One (Sunday)
The Cougars struck for five runs with two outs in the top of the first but the Wranglers answered with seven in the home half in part courtesy of a Barton error and five walks. Barton would score one in the third and fourth inning but Odessa tacked on runs in each inning of the game to win 17-7 in six innings.
Game Two (Sunday)
Much like the earlier game of the day, Barton jumped on the Wranglers in the first inning scoring two behind back-to-back RBI doubles by Vieyra and Gile. But the Cougars left the bases loaded and Odessa capitalized in the home half scoring three to surge back ahead.
In the second inning Vieyra delivered on a two-out double to tie the score. After holding the Wranglers scoreless in the bottom half of the inning, the Cougars scored six in the third keyed by an Alex King triple plating two. After a hit-by-pitch and walk in the home half of the inning, Odessa’s Jacoby Middleton hit a three-run homer as the Wranglers would answer back scoring four.
Holding a 9-7 lead into the bottom of the sixth, Odessa cut the deficit to one then received a two-out single to tie the game followed by scoring the game winner on a fielding error.
For the weekend the Cougars batted .258 with four players hitting over .400. The Cougars used fourteen pitchers during the series combining for an 11.39 ERA in front of a defense that committed nine errors. Tunnell, who enters the ’13 season as the Barton ace, was solid in his four innings of pitching in game one surrendering only four hits and getting four strikeouts.
