The Barton Community College men’s golf team ended its season with a 7th place finish at the NJCAA District III Championships in Lawrence Tuesday afternoon. The Cougars needed to finish in the top 5 at Alvamar Country Club in order to advance to the NJCAA Championships later this month. Indian Hills (Iowa) won the meet with a great 3rd round to finish with a 921. Iowa Western was 2nd with 933 and Hutchinson 3rd at 935. Barton finished with a 996. Timothy Spare fired a 243 for top Barton honors, placing in 23rd place.
Highlights
Both days saw an hour frost delay on the course as chilly weather hit the Lawrence area. The Cougars struggled with the opening of two rounds Monday. The Cougars shot a 337 with lowest scoring being an 83 turned in by Spare and Travis Kleweno. In the afternoon round all four scores for the team total were 83 or below with Spare shooting a 3-over par 75. That led Barton to a 322 for the round. In the final 18 holes played Tuesday Barton matched its score from the opening round with a 337 to finish in 7th.
Spare finished with an 83-75-85—243 to lead the Cougars followed by Kleweno with an 83-81-81—245 for 29th. Tanner George shot 86-83-82—251 to also finish in the top 40 at 38th. Casey Hitch shot 85-83-90—258 (45) and Tanner Berning 94-90-89—273 (49). The Cougars also had a pair of golfers compete as individuals in the meet with Aaron Spare shooting a 381 and Willie Hodges a 322.
