Barton men take 5th at Hesston in Jayhawk Meet 5

The Barton Community College men’s golf team finished 5th Monday at the Hesston Country Club in Jayhawk Conference Meet 5. With the 5th place finish, Barton has positioned itself solidly in the overall 5th spot with only the Jayhawk Conference Championships left on the conference slate. Hutchinson won the meet with a 36-hole team total of 596. The Cougars shot a 650, edging Allen County by a single stroke for that 5th spot. Travis Kleweno finished tied for 11th individually with a 15-over 157. The Cougars will wrap up the conference season Monday and Tuesday at Sand Creek Station in Newton.

Highlights
The Cougars were consistent as a team between the morning 18 holes and the afternoon 18 holes. Barton shot a 326 in the morning round and a 324 in the afternoon round. Barton had a 3-stroke lead over Allen County after the opening round then held on as Allen shot at 322 the final 18 but finished with a 651. Independence, which had been battling Barton for 5th in the season standings, had a rough day and finished 8th, giving the Cougars some separation in that 5th spot.

Kleweno led the way for Barton, also staying consistent on the day with a 79-78—157 over the Par 71 layout. Tanner George was tied for 27th with a 77-87—164 while Timothy Spare shot a near reverse of George with an 87-79—166 for 31st. Tanner Berning posted an 83-85—168 for Barton and Casey Hitch shot a 94-82—176. It was Hitch’s 82 in the afternoon that proved to be the difference in Barton getting 5th as a team. The 82 was the 3rd best score of the round and saved the Cougars who finished 5th by that single stroke over Allen. Ryley Haas of Hutchinson won the meet with a 74-69—143. That mark was 5 strokes better than 2nd place and the 69 was the only round even or under par during the day.

The 5th place finish tied for Barton’s best on the season in conference play. No team other than the top 4 in the conference – Hutchinson, Dodge City, Johnson County, and KCK – has finished in the top 4 of any conference meet this year. The Cougars have finished 5th or 6th in all 5 meets now.

The 9 conference foes will once again meet up Monday and Tuesday at Sand Creek Station in Newton for the Jayhawk Conference Championships. The event will be a 54-hole tournament with the players shooting 36 holes the opening day and 18 holes the final day.
