Barton men’s golf 2nd at Central Christian Invitational

The Barton Community College men’s golf team stepped outside of Jayhawk Conference play, taking 2nd place at the Central Christian Invitational at Turkey Creek Golf Course in McPherson earlier this week. Barton led after the opening day Monday by a slim margin then finished 2nd to Kansas Wesleyan in the 9-team event. The Cougars will jump back into Jayhawk meets with a trip to Hesston Monday for the 5th of 6 conference meets.

Highlights
Barton battled the winds and moisture Monday to shot a team total of 334 and lead Kansas Wesleyan by two strokes. No other team was within 15 strokes of the two schools. The Cougars weren’t as effective day two as the weather turned a bit nicer finishing with the 4th best score on the day. But Barton’s lead on the rest of the field was big enough to hold on for 2nd place by a comfortable 10 strokes. Overall scoring was more than 6 strokes better per player on day two – nearly 22 strokes per team.

Kansas Wesleyan won the event with a 336-314 – 650, followed by Barton at 334-329 – 663. Host Central Christian was 3rd at 673 followed by Oklahoma Wesleyan University at 675. Independence was 5th with a 678.

Barton’s Tim Spare tied for 4th overall, shooting a 158 over the two days. Spare shot an 83 the opening day then fired a 75 on the 2nd day. The 75 tied for the 2nd lowest score of the tournament by any of the 54 golfers. Neal Jeffrey of Kansas Wesleyan won the event as the only golfer in the 70’s both days with a 79-74 – 153.

Travis Kleweno just missed a Top 10 finish with his 80-87 – 167 that tied him for 12th, one stroke out of the Top 10. Kleweno was tied for 2nd after the opening day with his 80 but had a tough stretch of holes on Tuesday on his way to the 87.

Tanner George shot an 85-85 – 170, Aaron Spare 86-88 – 174, and Tanner Berning a 97-81 – 178 to round out the Barton team scoring. The Cougars also took two players for medalist play with Casey Hitch shooting a 96-91 – 187 and Willie Hodges a 103-86 – 189.

The Cougars currently sit 5th overall in the Jayhawk Conference standings with two meets to play. Barton has 18 points, followed closely by Independence at 15 and Coffeyville at 14. All 3 teams are a distance from 4th, which is held by KCK with 25 points.

Barton will play at Hesston Monday then wrap up the conference season at the 2-day Jayhawk Conference Championships at Sand Creek Station in Newton April 18-19. The District tournament will be held at Alvamar in Lawrence May 2-3.
