The Barton Community College men’s golf team finished 6th at the Jayhawk Conference opening meet Monday at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield. The Cougars shots a 638 over the 36-hole event – 17 strokes out of 4th. Hutchinson won the meet with a 578. Casey Hitch and Travis Kleweno led Barton with a 12-over par total of 156 for the two rounds. Barton will be back on the course for the 2nd conference meet of the fall season at Turkey Creek in McPherson September 27.
Highlights
Just two teams were able to break 600 for the meet with Dodge City joining Hutch with a sub-600 mark at 595 for 2nd. Johnson was 3rd at 611 with KCK 4th with a 621. The Cougars 5th place effort was in the middle of the 9-team event.
Hitch and Kleweno tied for 18th at the meet both shooting an 8-over 80 in the morning round before finishing with a 4-over 76 in the afternoon. Timothy Spare was the top score for Barton after the 1st round, shooting a 3-over 75 before slipping to an 83 to finish the day. That was good for 22nd overall. Tanner George shot an 83-85 – 168 for the Cougars while Tanner Berning shot an 88-87 – 175.
Sam Schulte of Hutchinson won the individual honors with a 3-under par 141. He was joined under par by teammate Craig Howell with a 1-under 143. Those were the only two linksters to break par on the day.
Barton will be on the course when at Turkey Creek when the Cougars host the 2nd of the Jayhawk Conference’s 3 fall designates.
