Barton men 7th at final conference meet; finish 5th in season totals

The Barton Community College men’s golf team recorded its lowest conference finish of the season with a 7th place finish at the Jayhawk Conference Championship at Sand Creek Station in Newton Monday and Tuesday. Barton shot a team total of 1011 over the 54-hole event – 20 strokes from 5th. But the Cougars still finished the conference season 5th overall out of the 9-team race. Hutchinson won the conference, finishing 1st 4 of the 6 events including the final one to edge Dodge City. The teams will now focus on the District III Championships at Alvamar Country Club in Lawrence May 2-3. That will determine the golfers that move on to the NJCAA Championships at Odessa, Texas later in May.

Highlights
Barton struggled out of the gate, shooting a 339 the opening 18 holes Monday morning over the Par 72 layout. That put the Cougars 8th after the opening round. Barton battled back into 7th to end the opening day, improving its afternoon total with a 331 but still well behind 5th and 6th. The wind changed direction for Tuesday round, making the course an average of 8 strokes tougher per team – 2 per individual. The Cougars shot a 341 the final round. Hutchinson passed Dodge City on that final round for the conference championship, shooting a 310 to Dodge’s 321. Hutch finished with a 915 and Dodge a 919. That was also the difference in the season-long team championship with the final meet counting 1.5 times in the standings.

The Cougars were paced by Travis Kleweno. The freshman from Hays was a model of consistency through the event with an 80-82-81—243 total. That tied for 21st overall. Timothy Spare had the best round for Barton, shooting a 79 during the afternoon round Monday. He finished 5 strokes behind Kleweno with an 84-79-85—248. Tanner George shot 84-80-91-255 and tied for 33rd overall. Tanner Berning went 91-90-86—267 and Casey Hitch 91-97-89—278.

Dodge City’s Chien Hau Tan won the event, playing near par the opening day with his 71-74-78—223. That was 5 strokes better than teammate Alex Tiong with a 73-75-80—228. The duo also finished 1-2 on the season in the individual totals with Tiong taking the top honors and Tan runner-up numbers. Kleweno finished tied for 15th in the overall standings.

The Cougars will be off until May 2-3 when Barton takes part in the NJCAA District III tournament that will determine those that will move on to the NJCAA Tournament. The event will be played on the country club side of Alvamar in Lawrence.
