The Barton Community College women’s golf team finished 17th at the 2011 NJCAA National Golf Championships in Daytona Beach, Fla. this past week. After rounds about 420 the opening two days, Barton got comfortable with the LPGA International Golf Course and shot 410 and 404 the final two days to move into 17th. It is the school’s highest finish since a 10th place effort in 2006. Host Daytona State won the event with Redlands College (Okla) taking 2nd.
Highlights
Barton opened the NJCAA Championships with a 421 and 432 the opening two days with Rachel Strecker leading the way with a 96 and 98. She followed the next two days with a 95 and 89 to finished 65th at the event. At that point Barton found itself in 18th place – just 3 strokes from 17th. Barton closed that gap to a single stroke with a 410 on day three and a 412 from Bismarck State (ND). But on the final day, Barton blew away Bismarck with a 404 to a 435 score for the North Dakota school to handily move into 17th. The Cougars finished with a 1667 while Bismarck finished with a 1697. Daytona State shot 1195 with Redlands at 1218 – 70 strokes ahead of the rest of the field.
In addition to Strecker’s 378 total Chelsea Dietz finished with a 107-107-102-103—419 total, Shanda Thompson a 105-115-104-110—434 and Lindsey Wait a 113-112-109-102—436. Mitsuki Katabhira of Daytona State won the individual medalist honors with a 2-over par 290, shooting 74-73-72-71 during the week on the par 72 layout.
