Barton women win 3rd straight golf meet; Strecker wins individual honors

The Barton Community College women’s golf team is establishing itself as the team to beat this year at the Region VI meet later in the spring. Barton won for the 3rd straight time – the 2nd straight time in conference – with its win at Quail Ridge Golf Course in Winfield Sunday during the 3rd Jayhawk Conference Designate this season. Rachel Strecker won the meet with an impressive 87 on the windy day – winning individual medalist by 5 strokes. The Cougars next action will be on its home course the Club at StoneRidge in early April.

Highlights
The Cougars rolled to the easy win with a 391, winning by 29 strokes over 2nd place Colby which fired a 420. Dodge City took 3rd with a 434 and Coffeyville rounded out the field with a 444. The Cougars placed 5 golfers in the Top 10 during the event – one playing as an individual. The opening 9 holes slated for Saturday were scratched due to the inclement weather after the golfers had already started play.

Strecker fired the 87 with a strong south wind blowing and was the only golfer to shoot in the 80’s during the day. Only 4 golfers broke 100. Barton’s Shanda Thompson was 5th with an even 100 followed by Chelsea Dietz with a 101 for 6th. Rounding out Barton’s 391 team total was Lindsey Wait who took 9th with a 103. Michelle Mull took 10th playing as an individual with a score of 107. Tara Schremmer shot a 113.

The win made it back-to-back conference wins after Barton easily won at Coffeyville to end the fall season. Strecker also won that meet with a 40-81 -121 total over the 27 holes. In the 1st conference meet the Ellinwood sophomore took 2nd by 3 strokes.

The Cougars will be on their home course for the final Jayhawk Meet on the schedule when the other three conference rivals come to the Club at StoneRidge April 2-3. The format once again will be a 9-hole competition on Sunday followed by an 18-hole day on Monday. The Region VI Meet will take place in late April at Carey Park in Hutchinson. Last season Strecker won the event while Barton took 2nd as a team.
