The Barton Community College women’s golf team proved itself the top team in the Jayhawk Conference by winning for the 3rd time in 4 Jayhawk Conference meets this season. Barton won on its home course – the Club at StoneRidge – in the final conference meet of the season. Barton also won Jayhawk meets at Quail Ridge in Winfield and at the Coffeyville Country Club. The only meet Barton did not win was the opening meet of the fall portion of the season when Dodge City won at Atwood Country Club. The Cougars still have the Region VI Championships at Carey Park later this month when they will qualify members for the NJCAA Championships in May.
Highlights
Barton won 3 conference meets with a 2nd place effort to win the Jayhawk Conference regular season championship. Dodge City was the only other team to win and took 2nd once but also took 3rd twice. Colby was 2nd twice and 3rd twice while Coffeyville finished 4th in all 4 events.
The Cougars won the final event by shooting a 604 during the 27-hole event at StoneRidge through windy conditions both days. Dodge City fired a 630 for 2nd and Colby 663 for 3rd. Coffeyville was 4th at 682. Barton opened play Sunday with a 401 – comfortably ahead of 2nd place Dodge City which shot a 415 over 18 holes. Barton shot a 206 the 2nd day to cruise to the 26 stroke win.
Barton Chelsea Dietz took 2nd – her best finish in Jayhawk play this season. The freshman from Russell shot a 96 the opening day then shot a 46 during the cold, windy 2nd day for a 142 total – one stroke for top medalists. Rachel Strecker was right behind Dietz with a 91-53 – 144 for 3rd. Colby’s Chelsie Gausman won the event with a 97-44 – 141. It was Gausman’s 2nd win in 4 meets to go with a pair of 2nd place finishes. Strecker also won two meets and took 2nd and 3rd. Dietz had not finished higher than 5th in the previous 3 meets.
