Barton women capture Region VI title; Four headed to Nationals

The Barton Community College women’s golf team won the Region VI Championship played Monday and Tuesday at Carey Park Golf Course in Hutchinson. Barton built an 8 stroke lead the opening day then held on to win by those same 8 strokes to bring home the Region VI Championship plaque. The Cougars shot a 392-394—786 to beat runner-up Dodge City, which shot a 400-394—794. In addition four Cougars placed in the Top 10 and earned the right to move on the NJCAA National Championship May 16-19 in Orlando, Florida. With four qualifying for the National Championship Barton will get to compete as a team in the event.

Highlights
Barton shot a 392 the opening day through off and on drizzle, cool temperatures and less than ideal conditions. That was the best round shot by any team during the 2-day 36-hole event and proved to be the difference. Colby was 3rd with a 416-404—820 and Coffeyville 4th with a 438-440—878.

On that opening day Rachel Strecker fired a 90 for the Cougars to pace the squad. Barton’s next 3 scores were bunched together around the 100 mark. Shanda Thompson shot a 99, Chelsea Dietz a 100 and Lindsey Wait a 103.

On day two, only one Barton golfer improved her score but that was all it took to give the Cougars the school’s 1st Region VI title since 2006. Thompson led the charge on the final 18 with a 94, edging Strecker (95) for the best Barton score of the day. Dietz shot her 2nd straight 100 and Wait came home with a 105 for the team total of 394.

Tara Schremmer shot 110-110—220 for the tournament as the 5th member of the team. Barton also had 3 golfers compete as individuals in the event led by Kaylee Miller with a 231. Kathleen Duncan shot a 233 and Michelle Mull a 240.

Strecker finished 4th individually with her 90-95—185 followed in 5th by Thompson at 99-94—193. Also in the top 10 and earning their way to the NJCAA Championships were Dietz with her 100-100-200 for 8th overall and Wait with a 103-105—208 for 9th.

Chelsea Glassman of Colby won the individual honors with an 88-80—168 total followed by Krystal Martinez of Dodge City who shot a 90-98—179. Jessica Leiker of Colby was 3rd with a 91-91—182.
