Cougars drop 6th overtime contest in season-ending loss at Cowley

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team fittingly ended its 2010-11 season with an overtime loss. For the 6th time this season, Barton fell in extra time, this time in the playoffs, falling to Cowley 65-63 in Arkansas City. The 1st round Region VI loss ended the Cougars season at 19-12. Cowley made it to the Region VI semifinals before ending its season with a 25-8 record.

Highlights
This time is was heartbreak would be even more difficult as sophomore Colin Beatty’s 3-pointer from the top of the key banked in and out in the final seconds that would have sent the Cougars to the quarterfinals in Wichita. It would have given them a matchup with 8-21 Allen County, who had upset Cloud County in the opening round.

Barton had stormed back in the final 7 minutes of regulation after tailed 57-48. The Cougars would limit Cowley to just 2 points the rest of the way, catching them at 59-all. Barton would have a chance with the ball in the final seconds, but failed to get a shot off. In fact, Cowley stole the inbounds pass and got off a half court shot of its own.

Neither team scored much in the extra session with the final points coming at the 1:23 mark when Tyrus McGee scored on a put back for the 65-63 lead. The two teams then traded empty possession setting up Beatty’s last second shot for the win.

Barton took control on the road to start the game, building a lead as high as 33-22 late in the half before lady luck helped the Tigers. Cowley cut it to 33-24 then after a Barton miss, the Tigers’ McGee hit a halfcourt shot to make it 33-27 at half. Two more McGee 3’s to start the 2nd half got the Tigers going and Cowley eventually overtook Barton with 11 minutes left in the game at 44-41 on a traditional 3-point play.

Freshman Dwayne Brunson led the Cougars in their final outing of the season with 26 points on 12-of-17 shooting from the floor. Storm Sanders added 12 and sophomore Adam Young tossed in 11. Brunson also led Barton with 13 rebounds and Sanders with 6 assists. McGee, the Jayhawk East Player of the Year, led Cowley with 23.

The Cougars played 7 overtime games in all this year, going 1-6. In fact, 6 of Barton’s final 13 games went into overtime where the Cougars went 1-5 and nearly played another in a 77-75 loss at Colby where Barton just missed a shot at the buzzer to send that game to overtime as well.
