Barton picks up West road win at Garden, 79-59

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team earned its first road win of the Jayahwk West season with a 79-59 win over Garden City at the Perryman Athletic Complex in Garden City. The Cougars used a big run in the first half to grab the lead then pulled out to a double digit lead to start the 2nd half of play and coasted to the win. The win evens Barton at 2-2 in the West after starting the year with 3 of 4 games on the road. Barton is now 14-4 overall. Garden fell to 1-2 in the West and 12-5 overall. The Cougars will get a home test Monday when Butler comes to the Barton Gym fresh off a win over No 1 ranked Hutchinson Saturday in El Dorado. Butler is 1-2 in the West and 11-6 overall.

Highlights
Barton fell behind early in 17-7 just 8 minutes into the contest prompting Coach Craig Fletchall to call a timeout. Following that timeout, Barton went to work. Sophomore Colin Beatty got it started with an offensive rebound and putback followed the next possession by an Adam Young jumper to make it 17-11. About a minute later Young knocked down a 3-pointer and followed two possessions later with an offensive rebound and basket to make it a 17-16 contest. Carl Wallace gave Barton the lead at 18-17 with a pair of free throws. The game stayed that way for nearly two minutes before a Wallace steal and dunk pushed the lead to 3. Another Wallace steal resulted in 1-of-2 free throws for the freshman, capping a 14-0 run to give Barton a 21-17 lead. Barton went to half up 35-34.

Garden momentarily took a 36-35 lead on the opening possession of the 2nd half but Jalen Boyd hit a soft runner in the lane on Barton’s ensuing possession and the Cougars never trailed again. Barton pushed the lead to 56-46 with 13:22 to play and eventually to 15 at 63-48 with 7:42 left. The Cougars continued to pull away with the lead reaching 20 at 75-55 late in the game.

The Cougars defense caused Garden fits in the game – especially in the 2nd half when Garden scored just 25 points on 28 percent shooting from the floor. Barton outscored Garden 17-0 in points off turnovers in the 2nd half 28-7 for the game in the category. Garden City turned the ball over 25 times to just 11 for the Cougars. Dwayne Brunson had 7 steals, Carl Wallace 5 and Adam Young 3 for Barton.

Young led Barton with 20 points followed by Brunson with 17 and Wallace with 16. Brunson and Wallace – who have struggled from the free throw line this year - combined to go 20-of-22 from the charity stripe with Brunson hitting all 8 attempts and Wallace 12-of-14. Storm Sanders led Barton with 5 assists. Barton held the West’s leading scoring Chauncy Williams to just 7 points on 3-of-13 shooting and just 1-of-7 on 3’s. He came in averaging 4 3-pointers a game and 22.5 points.

Barton will get a short turnaround with a home game Monday against Butler. The Grizzlies are coming off that 81-80 win over Hutch at the Power Plant, where they have lost just once this year. But on the road Butler is 2-4. Barton will be looking to make it 3 straight wins in the West as it tries to climb back in the conference race after a 0-2 start. Tip for the Martin Luther King Day game is set for 8 pm.
