Cougars impressive in wins at Barton Classic

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team won a pair of games in impressive fashion over the weekend on its home floor in the Barton Classic. The Cougars defeated Quakerdale Friday night at the Barton Gym 86-54 then had an easy time with Frank Phillips as well Saturday in a 104-74 win. Barton remains unbeaten on the season at 4-0 overall. In other games at the Barton Classic, Pratt split games with the two schools, losing to Frank Phillips 78-77 Friday then beating Quakerdale 84-68 Saturday. Barton will be back in action Tuesday when Brown Mackie visits the Barton Gym for a 7 pm tip. Barton will also be at home this weekend in the Cougar Booster Club Classic.

Highlights
Barton used a big run late in the 1st half Friday night to pull away from Quakerdale on its way to the 32-point win. The Cougars led 19-14 with 8:26 to play in the half before a 13-0 run over the next 4 minutes gave the Cougars an 18-point lead. Kevin Barber started the run with a 3-pointer, followed by 4 straight free throws from Carl Wallace. Darius Hill added a layup and Wallace capped the run with a trey of his own and a 1-of-2 effort at the line with 4:21 left gave Barton a 32-14 lead. The Cougars took a 39-19 to the locker room.

The lead was never lower than 20 in the 2nd half as Barton cruised to the win. Dwayne Brunson led 3 Cougars off the bench in double figures with his team-high 13. Barber added 11 and Hill 10 off the bench. The lone starter to reach double figures was Wallace with 12 points. Chris Cantino grabbed 13 rebounds to pace the Cougars while Colin Beatty had 5 assists to lead Barton. Wallace added 4 steals.

The Cougars put the hammer down early against the Plainsmen of Frank Phillips. Adam Young started things with a 3-pointer on Barton’s 3rd possession and the Cougar offense found high gear. Barton scored on its next 5 possessions, 8 of its next 9, and 11-of-13 as the Cougars pushed the lead to 25-8. The Barton lead reached as high as 27 at 40-13 with just more than 5 minutes to play in the half. Frank Phillips whittled that lead down to 50-28 by half. That 22-point halftime lead would as close as the Plainsmen would get following the Barton knock-out punch in the opening 20 minutes of play.

Cantino had a huge night for the Cougars with 27 points and 13 rebounds. The freshman hit 10-of-14 shots from the floor and 7-of-9 free throws for his career best scoring effort four games into his Cougar career. Devonte Grant added 16 off the bench on 3-fo-4 shooting behind the arc. Young had 13 points and Dwayne Brunson added 11. The Cougar bench proved big again outscoring the Frank Phillips bench 41-22.

Barton will look to start 5-0 Tuesday night when Brown Mackie visits the Barton Gym. Last season Barton lost the home-and-home series with Lions including a 75-68 set at the Barton Gym. Brown Mackie will bring a 4-2 record the Barton Gym with losses to Coffeyville and KCK. The Lions have defeated West team Dodge City this year as well.
