The Barton Community College men’s basketball team has been tabbed to finish 5th in the Jayhawk West this season. The Cougars won the conference in 2009 before slipping to 8th last season. Barton will open its season 7 pm Monday against the Bethany JV at the Barton Gym. Hutchinson was picked to win the league followed by Seward County.
The Cougars will be lead this year by returning 2nd team All West pick Colin Beatty. The 6-5 sophomore guard from Lanham, Maryland led the Cougars in rebounding last season at 8.7 per game and tossed in 14.3 points per contest as well. Sophomore transfer Adam Young averaged 3.6 points and 3.9 rebounds in 20 minutes a game for the NCAA Division II Bulldogs. He played in all 27 games starting 22 times. Newcomers Chris Cantino and Carl Wallace are also expected to make an impact for the Cougars.
Cowley was picked to win the Jayhawk West followed by Coffeyville and Independence. Following Hutch and Seward in the West are Garden City and Butler before the Cougars. Behind Barton is Dodge City, Cloud County, Pratt, and Colby.
