Cougars lose to West-leading Saints

The Barton Community College men’s basketball team lost to Jayhawk West leading Seward County Saturday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars lost to the Saints 71-50 on Homecoming at Barton. It was back-to-back losses for the Cougars on their home floor as Barton fell to 5-5 in the West and 17-7 overall. Seward, ranked No 16 in the NJCAA improved to 9-1 in the West and 21-3 overall. Barton will hit the road Monday in quick turnaround, traveling to Dodge City. Dodge is coming off an 80-79 upset win at No. 8 Hutchinson Saturday. Tip for the Monday contest will be at 7:30 pm.

Highlights
Barton struggled to score in the loss to Seward. The 50 points was a season-low for the Cougars as were the 19 field and 29 percent shooting from the floor. Barton hit just 19-of-66 field goal attempts during the contest. The 18 turnovers the Cougars committed matched the 2nd highest total of the year as well.

Barton fell behind by 12 at halftime, trailing 34-22. The Cougars were never able to make a serious run at the Saints in the 2nd half as Seward led by 20 a good portion of the final 20 minutes. The win was the 9th straight for the Saints who now have a 3-game lead on the rest of the West with just 6 games to play.

Barton was led by 14 points and 12 rebounds from freshman Dwayne Brunson. Colin Beatty added 10. But the two put up a combined 10-for-34 from the field to score those points. Jeremy Jones led Seward with 17 points while Daveon Bordingham added 15 points and 15 rebounds. Marky Nolen posted a double-double as well with 11 and 11.

Barton will head back to the road where the Cougars have won 3 straight and played much better basketball in the process. Barton has lost just twice on the road this season while dropping 4 games at home. Dodge City is coming off that big win over the Hutchinson and is in a battle for a top four finish in the West and a home playoff game as are the Cougars. Dodge City is currently 4-5 in the West and 15-8 overall.
