For the second time in the conference season and coming against the same opponent, the No. 19 ranked Barton Community College men’s basketball team won a game without scoring 80 points as they defeated Butler Community College Wednesday night 74-67 at the Barton Gym. The Cougars, who defeated Butler 71-62 in January, were led by Dwayne Brunson’s twenty-six point eleven rebound performance as Barton’s bench outscored Butler 43-12. With Seward County’s Wednesday night loss the Cougars move within a game of first place but are also a game out of fifth place as the Jayhawk West race tightens up. Barton, 8-4 in conference play and 22-4 overall, holds a half game lead on Hutchinson as the two teams will face off at 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the Hutchinson Sports Arena. With the loss Butler drops to 2-9 in conference and 8-17 overall.
Scoring
Dwayne Brunson led two Barton players in double-digit scoring with twenty-six points and eleven rebounds. Andell Cumberbatch, who like Brunson came off the bench, added twelve points. Despite not scoring in the game, freshman Kurt Walker had perhaps one of his best games on the floor this season as he dished out seven assists against only two turnovers. Turon Parker and Darius Hill each just missed double figures with nine points while the Cougar’s season leading scorer Algie Key was limited to eight points.
Andrew Victoria led the Grizzlies in scoring with twenty-two points while Sean Osler and Justin Simmons scored seventeen and twelve points respectively.
