Barton Community College men’s basketball player Algie Key has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Co-Player of the Week.  The freshman from Decatur, Georgia, put up a career high 32 points in Barton’s lone game this week, a 84-69 win over Colby Community College Saturday night at the Barton Gym.  Additionally Key was instrumental in keeping the Cougars within one at halftime as he shot 8-for-12 from the field scoring 17 of Barton’s 35 first half points.  Key shares the week’s honor with Johnson County Community College’s Justin Leathers.  Since Leathers plays for the Division II Cavaliers, Key is the Region VI’s Division I nominee for the second time this season for the national player of the week honors.

For the season Key averages just under nineteen points and seven rebounds per game at 18.8 points and 6.8 rebounds.  Key also averages five assists per game and just shy of two steals in leading the Cougars to a 23-5 overall record and receiving votes in the national poll.  Barton has just two regular season games remaining as they travel to Pratt on Wednesday before returning home for Saturday’s last regular season game against Cloud County Community College.  The Cougars are currently in a tie with Cloud for third place at 9-5 but have secured a first round home Region VI playoff game on Wednesday March 7.
