No. 7 Cougars suffer first loss of season; fall to Seward in KJCCC season opener

The No. 7 ranked Barton Community College men’s basketball team dropped their first game of the season losing 73-67 to Seward County Community College Wednesday night at the Barton Gym.  After leading by twelve at the break, the Cougars were outscored by eighteen points in the second half to drop its Jayhawk West conference opener.  With the loss Barton falls to 14-1 on the season while Seward improves to 13-2.  Barton will look to rebound this Saturday as they travel to Dodge City to take on the Conquistadors in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.  Much like Seward, Dodge City picked up a big conference road win as they defeated No. 10 Hutchinson 78-75.

Highlights
After trailing 8-5 in the first four moments of the the first half, Barton went on a 13-0 run in the next three moments to take control.  Carl Wallace started the run by knocking down a three-pointer as he scored eight of the Cougars thirteen points.  After the Saints cut the lead to four, Barton would stretch their first half lead to fourteen three times before settling for a twelve point halftime advantage.

Seward started on a 10-0 run in the second half's first three minutes to cut the Barton lead to one.   The Cougars withstood the Saints run to build a nine point advantage with just eleven minutes to play and maintained an eight point lead with 9:39 to play.

Keyed by the second-half nineteen point and six rebound performance of sophomore Daveon Boardingham, the Saints would outscore Barton 17-7 to take its first lead of the second half at 58-56 with just under five minutes to play.  Boardingham scored eight of the Saints points during that stretch as Seward would not trail for the rest of the contest.

Scoring
The Cougars only placed three players in double figures and were again led by freshman Algie Key.  Key scored 23 points on the night while sophomores Dwayne Brunson scored 14 and Carl Wallace contributed 10.

The Saints place four players in double figures led by the 19 point 11 rebound performance by Boardingham.  Deverell Biggs scored 13, Corieon Pearson with 11, and Kaheem Ransom finished with 10.  Boardinham and Edson Avila also finished with 4 blocks each.
