In a final tune up for its upcoming weekend classic, the Barton Community College men’s basketball team struggled early but found its high tempo offense in defeating Southwestern College Junior Varsity 113-57 Tuesday night at the Barton Gym. The 6-0 Cougars will play three games this weekend in the Highland Hotel Booster Club Classic which includes fellow Jayhawk Conference members Independence Community College and Labette Community College. Barton will play at 7:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday against Independence and Labette respectively, then wrap up the Classic with a 3:00 p.m. game on Sunday against Frank Phillips College.
Highlights
The Cougars started slow trailing Southwestern by four just five minutes into the contest but outscored the Moundbuilders 18-2 in the next five minutes to bust the game open on the way to a twenty-nine point halftime advantage. In the second half Barton would double-up Southwestern with a 51-24 second half scoring advantage to finish with the fifty-six point margin of victory.
Barton played all thirteen players with everyone contributing at least two points. Barton had six players in double figures paced by Dwayne Brunson with 24 points and 8 rebounds in only twenty minutes of action. After shooting just shy of sixty percent in the first half in building a twenty-nine point first half lead, the Cougars cooled to a fifty-four percent field goal percentage for the game.
Joining Brunson in double digit scoring was Jalen Boyd with 13 while Algie Key, Andell Cumberbatch, and Darius Hill each had 12 points. Key and Julian Rose each had a double-double as Key added 11 rebounds while Rose finished with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Southwestern had two players in double-digits as Erik Johnson scored 12 and Michael Aduddell added 11 points.
