FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Release by Mike Marzolf
The Barton Community College men's soccer team has shrugged off its sluggish start to the season, winning a pair of road contests over an extended weekend to make it 4 straight victories. The Cougars moved to 2-0 in the Jayhawk Conference with a 4-2 win over Pratt Thursday in Haviland then stepped outside the conference for a 3-1 win at Laramie County (Wyom). Barton is now 5-3-1 on the season. The Cougars will be part of a big showdown in Jayhawk play Wednesday when region-leading Cloud County visits Cougar Fields at 4 pm.
Highlights
Barton scored in the opening minutes of the win over Pratt when Andre Souza found the top corner on an assist from Aaron Appel. Sam McCrillis made it 2-0 30 minutes into the contest finishing a cross from Ahmad Bah. Ricardo Yeverino scored both 2nd half goals for the Cougars on assists from Souza and Adrian Alvarez.
Barton made it 4 straight wins with a 3-1 win in Wyoming Saturday as McCrillis added two more goals and Yeverino scored once and added a pair of assists. McCrillis scored his 1st on a cross and finish from the edge of the box just 5 minutes into the contest. Yeverino, who assisted on the 1st goal – made it 2-0 with a header off a free kick from Alvarez 30 minutes into the game. McCrillis and Yeverino hooked up again with 15 minutes left in the contest as Yeverino crossed the ball to McCrillis who first-timed it into the net for a 3-0 lead. Laramie County scored its only goal with 10 minutes left in the contest.
Cloud will bring a 6-1 Region VI record worth 18 points into Barton – currently 9 points ahead of the next best total. But the Thunderbirds have played at least 3 more games than the rest of the conference leaders. Barton has just 6 points with its 2 wins but is still 1 of 3 teams without a loss in region play. Cloud is an impressive 8-1 overall this year with the only loss coming to Dodge City. Dodge is 1 of those 3 unbeatens in region play.
Notes
McCrillis was tabbed the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week Tuesday. McCrillis scored 5 goals during Barton’s 3 win and added an assist. The Cougars won 3 road games – at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa, Pratt, and Laramie County.
