FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Release by Mike Marzolf
The Barton Community College men's soccer team has shown the capacity over its previous 9 seasons to string together wins – bunches of them at times. This year’s club – the 10th edition of Cougar Soccer – is looking to do just that. The Cougars put together back-to-back for the 1st time on the young season Tuesday with a 5-1 win at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa. That came on the heels of a 4-1 win over Cowley late last week. The Cougars are now 3-3-1 on the year with a contest against Pratt – a school in its initial season of soccer – Thursday in Haviland. All 3 loses came to teams either ranked or receiving votes – including No. 2 San Jacinto (Texas). The Cougars tie came against the No. 1 ranked team in the country Tyler (Texas).
Highlights
Barton turned up the pressure midway through the 2nd half in Tonkawa to pull away for an easy win. The Cougars took a 1-0 lead in the opening half on a Kevin Ellis goal just 5 minutes into the contest on a pass from Sam McCrillis. That lead held until the start the 2nd half when Tonkawa netted a goal by Tomas Mares to even the score at 1-1 just two minutes into the half.
With 25 minutes left in the contest, Barton put together one of those runs it has become accustomed to at times over the years. The Cougars scored 4 goals over the next 15 minutes to take control. Ellis made it 2-1 on a header from Sean Lynk with 25 minutes left for a 2-1 lead and with 20 minutes to play Lynk found McCrillis for another header and a 3-1 lead. McCrillis added his 2nd goal with 15 minutes to play in the contest on a pass from Igor Barbosa and David Major rounded out the scoring 5 minutes later on a rebound off a penalty kick by Rodrigo Barbosa.
Barton won its Jayhawk Conference opener in similar style as Cowley took a 1-0 lead to intermission before the Cougars turned it on in the 2nd half. Barton scored 3 goals over a 5 minutes span to win that contest. Trailing by that 1-0 score, the Cougars tied the contest at 1-all on a Ricardo Yeverino goal from McCrillis 56 minutes into the game and made it 2-1 when the pair reversed roles two minutes later on a McCrillis goal from Yeverino. Yeverino scored again at the 61-minute mark on a pass from Aaron Appel for a 3-1 lead and Cougars never looked back.
Barton will look for its 3rd win in a row Thursday when the Cougars travel to Haviland to take on Pratt. The Beavers are in their 1st year of soccer and are using the field at nearly Barclay College. Kickoff is set for 7 pm. This weekend Barton will travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming for Classic play. The Cougars will play Salt Lake (Utah) and Laramie County.
