The Barton Community College men's soccer team wrapped up the highest finish in school history Sunday afternoon with a 3-0 win over Monroe College (NY) in the 3rd place game at the NJCAA National Tournament in Tyler, Texas. The Cougars scored twice in the opening half and added another goal in the 2nd half for the win. Barton lost in the semifinals to eventual national champion and host Tyler Junior College. Barton lost to Tyler 3-0 in the semifinals. Tyler rolled to a 5-1 win in the title game over Cincinnati State Tech. Barton ends its season at 21-4-1.
Highlights
The Cougar took control of the 3rd place contest during a 15-minute stretch of the opening half. Barton’s Ricardo Yeverino scored 18 minutes into the game for the 1-0 lead. Barton added another goal 14 minutes later when Kevin Ellis headed in a free kick from Sean Lynk to give Barton a 3-0 lead with 13 minutes to play in the opening half. Barton took that 2-0 lead to halftime.
The Cougars controlled the play most of the way and with 25 minutes left in the game removed the little doubt left in the outcome when Lynk scored a goal of his own following a free kick that was headed out by the Mustangs where Lynk fired it back into the net. Kyle Schlagle got the win in goal for Barton, stopping the only two shots the Barton defense allowed to be put on goal.
Barton was sent to the 3rd place by top seed Tyler in the semifinals. Barton battled with Tyler for most of the contest before things got away from the Cougars in the final 25 minutes of the game. The contest will still tied at 0-0 when Tyler broke the scoreless tie on a goal with 25:07 to play in the game. Tyler added two more goals in the next 11 minutes to pull away for the 3-0 win. Tyler ended its season with an unbeaten record of 20-0-1. The only blemish was a 0-0 tie with Barton early in the season.
Two Cougars were tabbed to the All-Tournament team for their efforts. Sophomore Kevin Ellis and freshman Ahmad Bah were both selected to the 12-man team.
