Cougars win 2nd straight Region VI title; host Western Texas for right to move on to NJCAA National Championships

The Barton Community College men's soccer team made it 2 straight Region VI titles Sunday afternoon with a 2-0 blanking of Garden City at Hummer Park in Topeka. The win moves the Cougars to the Plains District Championships where Barton will host Western Texas Saturday at 2 pm with the winner moving on the to the 8-team NJCAA National Championships in Tyler, Texas. Barton defeated Johnson County in semifinal play 5-1 and is now 18-3-1 on the season. The back-to-back region titles are the 1st in school history for the Cougars.

Highlights
The Cougars wrapped up play Sunday with the Region VI Championship plaque in its possession thanks in large part to a 1st half goal at the last possible second. Sam McCrillis scored for Barton with 1 second left in the half on a pass from Igor Barbosa to give the Cougars the momentum heading into halftime.

Barton kept that 1-0 lead until the midway mark of the 2nd half when Italo Arcelino scored off a corner kick. Ayub Baker earned that assist and Barton kept the Broncbusters out of the net the rest of the way for the shutout win. Nathan Garrison recorded 9 saves in the contest for the Cougars in goal.

Barton did fall behind in the early stages Saturday to open play as Johnson County scored in the game opening 7 seconds. Barton didn’t even the match until the 38-minute mark in the opening half when Ricardo Yeverino scored the first of what would be a hat trick for the sophomore forward. The game went to half tied at 1-all.

Barton put the contest away during a furious 16-minute stretch in the 2nd half. Yeverino scored at the 56-minute mark and added another goal just 4 minutes later for a 3-1 lead and his hat trick. Ahmad Bah and Baker picked up assists on the thru balls.

Barton added another goal at the 69-minute mark as McCrillis took a cross from Fabio Almeida and 3 minutes later Rodrigo Barbosa scored on a pass from Adrian Ramirez as Barton pulled out to a 5-1 lead.

The Cougars now prepare for the biggest home game of the program’s 10-year career Saturday. It is the 1st time Barton will host a contest with the right to move on to the NJCAA National Tournament riding on the outcome. Previously when Region VI was the host it was played at a set site. Western Texas brings a very deceiving 3-20 record to the contest after having to forfeit all 18 of its regular season wins.

The Westerners were 18-2 at the end of the regular season before having to forfeit those wins for the use of an ineligible player. The only two losses Western Texas has suffered on the field have come to No. 1 ranked Tyler and No. 5 San Jacinto. Kick off for the contest is set for 2 pm at Cougar Fields.
