Barton wins big Region VI tilt over Cloud

The Barton Community College men's soccer team brought its A game to the pitch Wednesday afternoon in a 4-1 win over Cloud County in a Jayhawk Conference showdown at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. The Cougars scored early in the contest then used one of its trademark flurries later in the half to take control in the battle amongst leaders in the conference and region. Barton remained 1 of just 3 unbeaten teams in the region at 3-0 while improving to 6-3-1 overall. Cloud fell to 6-2 in the region and 8-2 overall. Barton will battle another unbeaten Saturday night at Neosho County as the Cougars play their way through a very important stretch on the schedule.

Highlights

Ricardo Yeverino scored a goal just 2 1/2 minutes into the contest when he beat the Cloud goalkeeper top right off a pass from Igor Barbosa. Barton played the opening 45 minutes with a 35-mph wind at its back and dominated the opening half getting off 9 shots while the Thunderbirds were not able to get off a single shot.

The Cougars took advantage of that wind during an 8-minute stretch midway through the opening half. It started when Cloud was called for a hand ball in the box off a corner kick, setting up a penalty kick for the Cougars. Kevin Ellis drove it into the net for a 2-0 lead 23 minutes into the game. Ellis added another goal less than 3 minutes later off a corner kick from Adrian Alvarez for a 3-0 lead. And 31 minutes into the half Yeverino added his 2nd goal when he put in an Ellis free kick from 45 yards out.

Cloud scored a 2nd half goal on a penalty kick situation of its own very early in the half but that would be the end of the scoring. The Thunderbirds did dominate possession with the wind at its back in the 2nd half, outshooting Barton 7-1 but the T-Birds were only able to put 2 of those on goal – not counting the penalty kick.

Barton could trim that unbeaten total to just 2 teams this weekend at Chanute against Neosho. The Panthers are 2-0-1 in Region VI play and 5-1-1 overall. Neosho tied with Allen County 0-0 in the conference and lost to Crowder (Mo) 2-1 in 2 overtimes earlier this season for its only loss. That contest will start at 7 pm. The Cougars will have a short turnaround as they play at 1 pm the day after a short trip to Independence. The Pirates are 0-5 in region play and 1-8 overall.

Notes
Sam McCrillis was tabbed the Jayhawk Conference Player of the Week Tuesday. McCrillis scored 5 goals during Barton’s 3 win and added an assist. The Cougars won 3 road games – at Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa, Pratt, and Laramie County.
