Barton beats Dodge 1-0; closes in on Jayhawk Conference title

The Barton Community College men's soccer team took another step closer to regaining the Jayhawk Conference title it relinquished a year ago with a 1-0 win over Dodge City at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. The win kept Barton unbeaten in Jayhawk Conference play – 2 games clear of everyone else in the Jayhawk in the loss column. Barton has just 3 conference game left – 4 region contests. A win Thursday at Allen County would secure Barton at least a share of the Jayhawk title. The Cougars are 8-0 in the Jayhawk and 11-3-1 overall this year. Barton has now won 10 straight. Dodge City falls to 5-3 in the region and 8-5 overall. Barton will return to action Tuesday at Hesston in a region contest at 7 pm.

Highlights
The lone goal in the contest came just shy of the 20-minute mark when Sam McCrillis scored on a header in the box from David Major. Barton dominated play in the opening 45 minutes, getting off 15 shots to just 3 for Dodge City. The 2nd half was much more even in shot count with Barton shooting 7 times and Dodge 5. Each put 2 on goal both of which were saved.

The win moved Barton just one win shy of a share of the Jayhawk Conference title and just 2 wins from wrapping up the top seed in the upcoming Region VI playoffs. Both can be accomplished next week as Barton plays a region contest against Hesston then will take on Jayhawk foe Allen Thursday. Picking up the two region wins and a Jayhawk win would secure both the conference title and top seed in the region.

Barton currently has won 10 straight since a loss to No. 2 ranked San Jacinto (Texas) back on Labor Day Weekend. The Cougars also tied No. 1 Tyler (Texas) that weekend. Another Cougar loss during the 1-3-1 start came to No. 13 North Iowa Area. Barton also lost to Iowa Western, which is receiving votes as are the Cougars. The combined record of the 4 teams Barton has lost to or tied is 33-4-5.
