Barton picks up big Jayhawk win over Garden; Johnson in town Saturday

The Barton Community College men's soccer team continues to earn big win after big win in its quest to recapture the Jayhawk Conference championship. The latest in those steps was taken Wednesday afternoon at Cougar Fields in Great Bend as Barton knocked off rival Garden City 2-1. That kept Barton as the only unbeaten team in the Jayhawk with a 6-0 mark. Garden fell to 4-2 in the conference and 6-2-2 overall. The Cougars are now 9-3-1 overall and have won 8 straight games. Barton continues its stretch of big games as the Cougars host the team that ended Barton’s reign atop of the Jayhawk last season when Johnson County comes to Great Bend Saturday.

  Highlights
As has been the case the past several seasons, Barton and Garden hooked up in a battle Wednesday. Barton scored the eventual game-winner in the opening minutes of the 2nd half when Kevin Ellis took a free kick in front of the goal and passed it off to Sam McCrillis on the right side. McCrillis returned the ball to Ellis, who drilled it to the left of the outstretched Garden keeper for a 2-1 lead just 3 minutes into the 2nd half.

From that point forward the Cougar defense was as good as it has been all year. Over the final 42 minutes of play, Garden City was able to put just one shot on goal, which was saved by Nathan Garrison. In fact the Broncbusters had just two total shots that final 42 minutes. Barton’s defense was pretty good the entire contest, allowing Garden just 5 total shots of which 4 were on goal. The lone goal came on a penalty kick by Devidy Cuncha midway through the opening half to tie the game at 1-all.

Barton grabbed a 1-0 lead when McCrillis scored on a header from Ricardo Yeverino 23 minutes into the contest. That led was short-lived as Garden’s penalty kick goal game just 5 minutes later.

Barton is now more than halfway through a crucial 6-game stretch in the Cougars quest for that Jayhawk Conference title. During those 6 games, the Cougars had or will have 5 of the 6 other teams in the conference with 2 or fewer losses. Currently the Cougars are 4-0 in that stretch with wins over Cloud County (currently 6-2 in Jayhawk), Neosho County (2-2-1), and Garden City (4-2). Still on tap are Johnson County (3-2) and Dodge City (4-2). Dodge will be in town Thursday. Barton also owns a win over Cowley (6-1). After the Dodge game, Barton will not have a Jayhawk team with less than 3 losses on its schedule.
