Cougars win in final minutes over Johnson; stay unbeaten in Jayhawk

The Barton Community College men's soccer team took it nearly to the end Saturday afternoon at Cougar Fields before pulling out a 2-1 victory over defending conference champion Johnson County in Jayhawk Conference play. The win came in dramatic fashion as the Cougars scored with 1:34 left in the game on its home field to keep Barton unbeaten in conference play at 7-0 and improved the Cougars to 10-3-1 overall. The Cougars are the lone unbeaten left in the conference. Johnson is now 6-6-1 overall and 4-3 in Region VI play. Barton can strengthen its firm grip on taking back the Jayhawk championship is has won 5 times over the past 10 years with a win at home Thursday against Dodge City.

Highlights
Barton is nearly through a brutal conference stretch that has seen them play nearly all the teams hovering in the top half of the conference with them. The Cougars are still unscathed through that stretch so far and are in good shape to capture the conference title.

Those chances improved dramatically on that Dula Fadis goal with 1:34 to play. Fadis scored the goal on a rebound off a Sam McCrillis attempt as Barton flurried at the Johnson goal for the game-winner. It was the 1st time the Cougars had led the entire game.

Barton had drawn the contest even with a Ricardo Yeverino goal 15 minutes into the 2nd half when he flicked in a pass from Ahmad Bah into an open net. The Cavaliers had taken a 1-0 lead in the opening half when Marc Schwinger scored on a rebound off a corner kick 17 minutes in the contest.

Ironically, all 3 goals came into a 15 mph north wind as neither team scored with the wind at its back. Barton got off 16 shots to just 6 for Johnson but Johnson put 5 of those 6 on goal while Barton hit only 2 more on goal at 7.

Barton now has a 2-game lead on everyone in the Jayhawk with its 7-0 mark. EVeryone else has at least 2 losses. Dodge City is currently 5-2 in the region and 8-4 overall. It is the last team Barton will play in the region with less than 4 losses.
