Perfect week gives Barton Jayhawk Conference title; top seed in region playoffs

The Barton Community College men's soccer team swept through 3 opponents this past week to secure the Jayhawk Conference Championship and the top seed in the fast approaching Region VI playoffs. A 2-0 win Saturday over Kansas City Kansas at Cougars Fields locked up both those honors. Earlier in the week the No. 14 ranked Cougars won road games at Hesston, 4-0, and Allen County, 1-0. Barton is still perfect in the Jayhawk with a 10-0 record and is 14-3-1 overall. The Jayhawk Conference title for Barton is the school’s 7th crown over the past 9 seasons. The Cougars are 53-1-2 in its last 56 Jayhawk Conference games over 6 years. Barton has just one contest left in the regular season as the Cougars travel to Coffeyville to take on the Red Ravens Wednesday.

Highlights
Barton wrapped up the title with a 2-0 blanking of KCK on the strength of a pair of 1st half goals. Barton took a 1-0 lead on an Italo Arcelino header from Kevin Ellis 10 minutes in. Barton made it 2-0 midway through the half when Fabio Almeida scored on an assist from Andre Souza on a pass in the box. Nathan Garrison and Kyle Slagle combined on the shutout for the Cougars as KCK got off just 2 shots.

The Cougars battled to a 1-0 hard-fought win in Iola Wednesday over Allen. The lone score came on a Dula Fadis goal from Sam McCrillis. Again the Barton defense was stingy as Allen did not get off a shot during the contest.

Barton won 4-0 at Hesston Tuesday, cruising to 3-0 lead at intermission and adding a 2nd half tally. Ricardo Yeverino scored twice in the contest and added an assist. Fadis and Arcelino each scored a goal as well while Ellis had a pair of assists. Yeverino and Ayub Baker also had an assist. The Cougars set the tone for the week on defense not allowing a single shot in the win.

Barton will wrap up its regular season at Coffeyville Wednesday against a Red Raven team that is 3-14 overall and 2-8 in the conference. The Cougars will host opening round action in the Region VI playoffs on Oct. 26 but the opponent and time has yet to be determined. Among the possible opponents for the opening round playoff game are KCK, Allen, and Neosho County.
