Release by Mike Marzolf
The Barton Community College men's soccer team began defense of its Region VI title with an easy 9-1 win over Kansas City Kansas Wednesday afternoon at Cougar Fields in Great Bend. Barton jumped to a 4-0 lead at half and cruised to the win to move into semifinal play Saturday in Topeka. The Cougars will take on Johnson County at 11 am Saturday at Hummer Park. The other semifinal game involves Cloud County and Garden City and will follow the Cougars game. The final are set for Sunday at Noon. Also on Tuesday Barton moved up two more spots on to No. 8 in the latest NJCAA poll.
Highlights
The top-seeded Cougars had 8 different players score during the contest with only Ahmad Bah finding the net twice in the route of KCK. Barton had a man advantage most of the contest following the red card ejection of a KCK player 21 minutes into the game. At that point the Cougars already led 2-0. Kevin Ellis gave Barton the lead for good 15 minutes in when he beat the KCK keeper high right on a pass from Igor Barbosa. Barbosa again got the assist on Barton 2nd goal when Bah drove the ball past the keeper 20 minutes in.
The Cougars added two more goals in the opening half when Barbosa was on the receiving end and scored a goal from Adrian Ramirez followed 30 seconds later by an Ayub Baker goal from Fabio Almeida. Ricardo Yeverino, Dula Fadis, and Sam McCrillis all added 2nd half goals as did Bah, scoring the 2nd time in the game. Also find the net was Aaron Appel, a sophomore who plays middle and back during his career, scoring for the 1st time in his career. Appel had 6 assists in his 42-game career but Tuesday was his 1st goal.
Barton now turns focus to Johnson County, a 2-0 winner at Cowley Tuesday as the No. 5 seed. Barton is 16-3-1 overall this year while Johnson is 11-8-1. Barton defeated Johnson by a slim 2-1 margin about one month ago at Cougar Fields. The winner will move into the finals to face No. 2 seed Cloud (15-2-1) or No. 3 Garden (13-2-2). Cloud defeated Garden 4-2 back in September in Concordia. Barton defeated Cloud 4-1 earlier this year and Garden 2-1.
At No. 8 Barton has worked itself to its highest ranking of the season. The Cougars started the year at No. 10 then fell out of the rankings after a 1-3-1 start to the season. Barton didn’t re-enter the rankings until 3 weeks ago, coming in at No. 14. Last week the Cougars moved up to No. 10. Barton’s only losses this year have come to 3 ranked teams – No 5 San Jacinto (Texas), No 14 Iowa Western and No 15 North Iowa. The Cougars tie came against the No 1 ranked team in the country all season long Tyler (Texas). That is the only game Tyler has not won this season at 14-0-1.
