The Barton Community College men's soccer team came from behind today in Concordia and defeated No. 16 ranked Cloud County Community College 3-2 in the second half of extra time. With the win the Cougars remain unbeaten in conference play and move to 8-1 on the season. Barton will travel to Cheyenne, Wyoming later this week in non-conference action. The Cougars will play Northwest College on Saturday at 1:30pm then face host Laramie County Community College at noon on Sunday.
Trailing 2-1 at halftime, Barton continuously attacked in the second half but it wasn’t until sophomore Ahmad Bah’s shot with three minutes remaining would the Cougars crack the T-bird defense to force extra time. In the first half of extra time it was another sophomore who saved the day as Italo Carvalho kicked away a potential Cloud winning goal in the waning seconds. As if to savor on the flair for dramatic, with just over three minutes remaining Bah dribbled through the Cloud defense to then find sophomore Jonson Shaad for the game winner.
“I’m proud of the players’ heart and desire to come from behind and win the game,” Barton Head Coach Oliver Twelvetrees said. “Italo is a great leader and was phenomenal as always that really helped us win this game.”
The Cougars wasted little time in getting on the scoreboard as sophomore Fabio Priore de Almeida launched a thirty yard blast just four minutes into the contest. However the T-birds didn’t back down as they scored the game’s next two goals off a close range shot at the twenty three minute mark and a score off a header with eighteen minutes remaining in the first half. Cloud County would go into the halftime break with a 2-1 advantage.
Notes: Barton men’s soccer opponents this weekend are a combined 11-2-2 and have faced a common opponent in No. 14 Otero College. Northwest tied Otero 1-1 while Laramie lost 1-0. Barton defeated Otero 2-0 back on August 28.
