Men’s Soccer season ends with semifinal 4-0 defeat to Cloud County

The Barton Community College men’s soccer team bid for a third straight Region VI title ended Saturday falling 4-0 to No. 10 ranked Cloud County Community at Topeka’s Hummer Park.  The Cougars end the season at 12-8 while Cloud, who went on to win the Region VI title, will take an 18-1-3 record to the Plains District Tournament next weekend in Concordia.

In an anticipated rematch of Barton’s come-from-behind overtime 3-2 victory back on September 20 in Concordia which gave Cloud its lone loss on the season, the game quickly turned in favor of the T-birds.  Cloud would score just ten minutes into the contest on a header off a corner kick and then again on a similar play less than ten minutes later to put Barton in a 2-0 hole early on.  Cloud would tack on another goal in the twentieth minute of the half to take a 3-0 lead to the intermission.

The second half didn’t start much better for the Cougars as Cloud quickly scored its fourth and final goal of the game within the first ten minutes.  The Cougars would get several shots on goal but simply could not find the back of the net on this day.

Barton concludes its 2011 season with sixteen victories and only four losses, however with early season forfeits due to an ineligible player, the Cougars finish officially with a 12-8 record.   Barton’s four losses came to teams either ranked or are nationally receiving votes.  The Cougars dropped a 1-0 second extra time game to No. 3 ranked Tyler Junior College, a 3-2 decision to nationally receiving votes Laramie County, a 2-1 loss to No. 19 Cowley College, and Saturday’s 4-0 season-ending loss to No. 10 Cloud.
