Barton picks up conference win with split at Colby

The Barton Community College softball team picked up its first win of the season with a split of Jayhawk West at Colby. The Cougars won the opener 8-2 in extra innings, scoring 6 runs on the top of the 8th. Barton lost the nightcap by a 7-4 score. Barton is 1-1 in the West and is 1-11 overall. Colby is 3-9 overall and also 1-1 in the conference. Barton will play four more conference road games this week at Seward County and Garden City.

Highlights
Barton scored its first run in the top of the 2nd to even the game at 1-all. Carly Schraeder singled in Tessa Sterling to tie the game. Schraeder again tied the game in the top of the 6th with a single that again scored Sterling. The Cougars nearly had lead on the hit but Abigail Olmedo was thrown at home trying to score from 2nd.

That sent the game to extra innings where the Barton offense put up 6 runs in the first extra frame. Sterling and Olmedo started the inning with singles and Alex Rodriquez broke the tie with a double that plated Sterling for her 3rd run on the game. The Barton bats – along with a couple of Colby errors – kept going to score 6 runs on 4 hits. Sterling went 3-for-5 in the win and scored the 3 runs. Aleeya Ybarra also had 3 hits for Barton. Schraeder and Olmedo each had two hits.

Three Cougars combined to limited Colby to just 3 hits in the win. Sarah Schmidt, Taylor Ardery, and Karen Harris each threw at least 2 innings in the contest with Harris picking up the win.

Barton continued to hit the ball in the 2nd game, pounding out 16 hits but producing only 4 runs off those hits. The game was tied at 3-all heading into the bottom of the 5th when Colby plated 4 runs to take control of the game. Barton rallied in the 7th, scoring once to make it 7-4, but left the bases loaded.

Amanda Lanigan went 4-for-4 for the Cougars while Sterling had another good game at the plate going 3-for-4. Barton did commit 3 errors which allowed 4 unearned Colby runs to score.

Barton will continue its road trek with doubleheaders in southwest Kansas. Barton is Seward and Garden during the Cougars Spring Break.
