The Barton Community College softball team went 1-2 during the weekend at the Region VI Championships in Wichita to end its season. Barton beat Colby to start the double-elimination tournament then fell to Butler and Garden City to ends its season with a 5-32 record. Barton won 4 of its final 9 games of the year.
Highlights
Barton opened play Saturday with a 2-1 win over Colby in a close contest that saw Barton score late then hold off the Trojans. The Cougars lost to top seed Butler later in the day by a 7-0 score then wrapped up their season with a tough 4-0 loss to Garden City on Sunday.
In the win over Colby the two teams went into the bottom of the 6th scoreless before Barton finally broke through for the lead. Anna Voss provided the big hit as she doubled in Alex Rodriguez and Tessa Sterling with 1 out to break the scoreless game.
Barton had to hold off Colby in the final inning as the Trojans scored a run and had runners on 1st and 3rd when Karen Harris got a strike out to end the game. Harris picked up the win, going all 7 innings and allowing just 4 hits – 3 in the final inning.
Barton fell behind early to the eventual Region VI champion Butler as the Grizzlies scored 4 times in the 1st inning. From there Barton held Butler off the scoreboard and kept things interesting until the 5th inning when Butler scored 3 more times for the 7-0 win.
In an elimination game Sunday, Barton kept things very interesting with Garden City as well. Garden scored single runs in each of the 1st 2 innings but Barton kept it a 2-0 until the bottom of the 5th when Garden added 2 more for the 4-0 final.
