Cougars still looking for wins

The Barton Community College softball team is still looking for its first win of the season after dropping a pair of doubleheaders recently. The Cougars lost three of those games by 4 runs or less including its 3rd 1-run loss of the season. The Cougars lost a doubleheader to Brown Mackie at Cougar Fields then were swept in Winfield by Southwestern. Barton is now 0-10 on the year.

Highlights
Barton fell behind Brown Mackie 4-0 in the opening inning of the doubleheader at Great Bend and the game didn’t change for the next 6 innings. Barton collected 8 hits in the game – 3 by Aleeya Ybarra, all doubles – but couldn’t get a runner across home plate. The Cougars left 9 runners stranded in the loss.

Barton trailed most of the 2nd game but a 5-run 5th put the Cougars in position to record their first win. The big blow came from Amanda Lanigan who doubled with the bases loaded, driving in 3 runs. Tessa Sterling and Anna Voss also had RBI in the inning as Barton took a 6-5 lead. After the Lions scored 3 in the top of the 6th Barton battled back with 2 of its own in the bottom of the inning when Sterling doubled in Ybarra and Kristin Schartz to tie the contest at 8-all. Barton left he bases loaded in the inning and Brown Mackie scored one in the 7th for the win.

The Cougars could only muster 4 hits in the opener at Southwestern on the way to an 8-0 blanking. In the 2nd game, Cougar Coach Heather Panning shuffled the lineup and bats exploded – at least in the 2nd inning.

Barton had a big 2nd inning scoring all 7 of its runs and taking a lead it would hold most of the game. The Cougars pounded out 5 hits in the inning with 6 different Cougars driving in runs and 7 different players scoring. Carly Schraeder drove in a pair. Unfortunately for Barton, the Cougars would get only 2 more hits the rest of the way. Southwestern closed the gap to 7-6 with a 3-run 5th then added 5 more in the 6th for the comeback win.
