Softball off to sluggish start; host Brown Mackie Thursday

The Barton Community College softball team dropped 4 games back-to-back days, just missing out on a pair of wins this past week. The Cougars lost two at home Wednesday to Cloud County, 9-0 and 8-7 then dropped two at Hutchinson the next day 5-4 and 8-2. Barton is now 0-6 on the young season – all non conference games with the Region VI softball setup. Barton will look for its 1st wins of the season Thursday when Brown Mackie comes to Cougars Fields for a 2 pm doubleheader.

Highlights
The Cougars nearly rallied for a pair of wins, coming up short Wednesday at home and Thursday on the road. At Hutchison Thursday, Barton had taken a 2-0 lead in the top of the 1st of the opener when Anna Voss doubled in Aleeya Ybarra and Alexandria Rodriguez. The Cougars led until the 4th when Hutch scored 3 times for a 4-2 lead. Barton trailed 5-2 in the top of the 7th but gave it one last rally for the 2nd game in a row. After Barton’s 1st 2 hitters were retired, the Cougars went to work. Chelsea Bauer, Amanda Lanigan and Rodriguez strung together 3 straight singles to load the bases. Voss made it 4 straight singles, driving in Bauer and Lanigan cutting the lead to 5-4. But that is where the rally ended with 2 runners on base.

The previous night in Great Bend, Barton faced a similar situation but with an even better chance of notching its first win. The Cougars trailed 8-3 heading into the bottom of the 7th before going to work on the comeback. This time the Cougars did it all with no outs. Ybarra, Bauer, Rodriguez, and Lanigan all singled to start the inning, cutting the lead to 8-4. Voss drew a bases loaded walk to make it 8-5. Tessa Sterling put the Cougars within reach of the win with a double to left to score two more and make it an 8-7 with runners on 2nd and 3rd and no outs. But a strike out and pop up took the steam out of the rally and Barton came up just short.

Rodriguez is leading the Cougars in hitting so far this year at a .588 clip with 10 hits in 17 at bats. Voss paces Barton in RBI with 11 and is hitting .471. Ybarra is also hitting .471 and leads Barton with 6 runs scored.

Brown Mackie will come to Cougars Fields with a 2-10 record for the scheduled 2 pm first pitch. The Cougars will then be on the road for their next 4 doubleheaders, not returning home until a March 30 date with Butler.
