Barton wins regular season finale; starts post season Saturday

The Barton Community College softball team picked up a win in the final regular season game of the year. Barton split games at Cougar Fields Friday with McCook (Neb) dropping the opening game 11-7 then winning the nightcap by a 6-5 score. Earlier in the week, Barton lost a pair to Butler in the final Jayhawk West games of the year. Barton will go to post-season with a 4-30 record and a 3-13 region record. The Cougars will be the 4 seed in the 5-team double elimination tournament, taking on 5th seed Colby to open play. The Region VI tournament will be held at Wilkins Stadium in Wichita on the campus of Wichita State University. Barton and Colby will open the event with a 10 am contest Saturday. The tournament will conclude Sunday.

Highlights
The Cougars ended the regular season by building a 6-1 lead then holding on for the win. Barton scored in each of the first 4 innings to build that lead. Chelsea Bauer scored in the first on a grounder by Alex Rodriguez to even the game at 1-all. The Cougars added two more in the 2nd. Carly Schraeder drove in Sarah Schmidt with a single and Aleeya Ybarra singled in Kristin Schartz for a 3-1 lead. A Tess Sterling home run to lead off the 3rd made it 4-1. Ybarra again drove in Schartz in the 4th for a 5-1 lead that grew to 6-1 when Bauer scored her 2nd run of the game on another Rodriquez ground out.

From there, Barton held on for the win. McCook scored 4 times in the 5th to cut the lead to 6-5. The Indians loaded the bases in the top of the 7th with just one out but Taylor Ardery got a strike out swinging and a ground out to pick up the save. Schmidt picked up the win for Barton.

Barton had chances in the opener with McCook but couldn’t keep pace on the scoreboard. Barton played from behind the entire game but matching the Indians nearly run-for-run. Barton had 12 hits in the loss, 2 each from Bauer, Anna Voss, Rodriguez and Schraeder. Bauer, Rodriguez and Schraeder also drove in 2 runs each with Voss and Rodriguez scoring 2 twice each.

Earlier in the week Barton lost 12-1 and 8-0 to Butler. In the opener, Barton collected 3 hits with Sterling getting an RBI and Bauer a run scored. Barton had just one hit in the 2nd game to the West champion Grizzlies.

The winner of the Barton/Colby game Saturday will play in the 2 pm game against West champion Butler. The loser of the game will play at 4 pm against the Seward County/Garden City loser.
