Run through regionals ends in third place finish for Cougar softball

Putting a disappointing regular season behind them, the Barton Community College softball team eliminated the second and fourth seeds to finish third in the Region VI Division I Softball Tournament this past weekend in Wichita, Kansas.  After a five hour rain delay on the Saturday, the fifth seeded Cougars dropped a 6-5 nine inning game to fourth seeded Colby Community College to open the tournament.  Returning for the 9:00 a.m. on Sunday, the Cougars dispatched second seeded Garden City Community College 8-0 in five innings to send the Broncbusters home then proceeded to pound Colby 14-8 to end the Trojans’ season.  After a fifteen minute break the Cougars returned to the diamond to face Seward County Community College falling 6-4 and ending Barton’s run through the tournament.  Barton finishes the 2013 season winning six of the last eight games to finish with a 15-26.

Cougar softball gains momentum towards region tournament

Needing to gain momentum heading into this weekend’s Region VI Division I Tournament, the Barton Community College softball team recently picked up four non-conference victories in Nebraska.  On Saturday the Cougars rallied with five seventh inning runs to win 9-8 then scored five run in the first inning of game two enroute to a 13-1 victory to sweep the doubleheader over North Platte Community College.   Barton wrapped up the two-day trip with a two-game sweep over McCook Community College on Sunday winning 6-2 and 5-4.  The Cougars will take a 13-24 overall record into Saturday’s first round matchup against 20-26 Colby Community College in the double-elimination Region VI Division I Tournament held at Wichita State University.  Colby got the better of the Cougars in the conference season winning three of the four matchups but the teams split the most recent meeting in Colby.  The winner will advance to the 2:00 p.m. game against No. 1 nationally ranked Butler Community College while the loser will play the 4:00 p.m. game against the loser of Seward County Community College and Garden City Community College.  Region VI Division I Tournament Information

Cougars end streak, split doubleheader with Pratt

After suffering a 7-3 defeat in game one, the Barton Community College softball team bounced back in game two winning 4-1 to split Monday’s doubleheader at Pratt Community College.  The win by the Cougars snapped a nine game losing streak and improves Barton’s record to 7-13 while the Beavers move to 17-21 on the season.  Barton returns to conference play on Wednesday for a 3:00 p.m. doubleheader at Garden City Community College. 

Game One
Pratt jumped on the Cougars in the first inning scoring four runs.  The lead would hold at four until a Shelby Plank single scored Ashlyn Osborne in the top of the fourth to cut the Barton deficit to three. 

After a scoreless at-bat for both teams, the Beavers scored three in the bottom of the sixth to increase the lead out to 7-1.

Barton tried to battle back in the seventh scoring two runs the first coming from a Jordan Haney sacrifice fly and the last coming on a Pratt fielding error.

Alex Dunlavy took the loss for the Cougars dropping her record to below .500 for the first time this season at 4-5.

Game Two
Pratt scored its lone run in the second inning but the Cougars quickly struck back in the top of the third as Darian Hudson scored on a Jordan Haney RBI single. 

The Cougars capitalized on a Pratt passed ball in the fourth inning as Emilia Davies raced home from third base giving Barton a 2-1 lead. 

Barton held the slim one run lead into the sixth when freshman Morgan Rohrbouck connected on her sixth homerun of the season.  The Cougars added an insurance run in the top of the seventh courtesy of another Pratt error to lead 4-1.

Haney, who went the distance for the Cougars, picked up her third win of the season to improve to 3-6.    

Cougar softball loses twinbill to nationally ranked Butler

Barton Community College's Ashlyn Osborne delivers a fifth inning solo homerun during game one of Barton’s doubleheader Thursday, April 14, 2013, versus Butler Community College at Cougar Field on the campus of Barton Community College.The Barton Community College softball team had little margin of error in Thursday’s doubleheader against the nation’s No. 2 ranked Butler Community College team.   Unfortunately for the Cougars the Grizzlies were too much and too often in capturing a pair of Jayhawk Conference victories 14-2 and 11-1.  The sweep increased the Barton losing streak to nine straight and drops the cougars to 0-8 in conference play and 6-12 on the season while Butler improves to 8-0 and 29-2 overall.    Barton will travel to Pratt on Monday for a pair of conference games at Pratt Community College beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Freshman Ashlyn Osborne led the Cougars from the plate going 3-for-5 in the doubleheader including hitting her first collegiate homerun, a solo blast to left center in the fifth inning of game one.

Butler connected on three home runs and pounded out twenty-seven hits including eight doubles in the day’s two games, also scoring eight or more runs in nineteen of their twenty-nine wins on the season.

Offensive woes plaque Cougar Softball in conference losses to Colby

Looking for their first conference win of the season the Barton Community College softball team struggled to string hits together in dropping a pair of conference games Monday to Colby Community College at Cougar Field.  The Trojans won a pitcher’s duel 2-0 decision in game one, then used a three run third inning in game two to cruise to an 8-2 victory.   Barton drops to 0-4 in conference play and 6-8 on the season while Colby earns their first victories of the conference season to improve to 2-4 and 7-11 overall.  Barton will travel to Liberal on Saturday for a pair of conference games at Seward County Community.  Game set for 2:00 p.m. at Lady Saints Field. 

Cougar Softball opens conference play with pair of losses to Garden City

The Barton Community College softball team opened conference play Saturday dropping two games to Garden City Community College at Cougar Field.  In a combined thirteen run seventh inning, Garden City outscored Barton 8-5 in the final inning to win game one 12-9.  The Broncbusters utilized a four-run fourth inning in winning 7-3 in game two in wrapping up the sweep.  Barton drops to 0-2 in conference and 6-6 overall while Garden City improves to 4-0 in conference and 8-9 overall.  Weather permitting, Barton will get back on the diamond Monday for a 12:00 p.m. first pitch doubleheader at Cougar Field against Colby Community College.

Cougar Softball splits road games at Dodge

The day started promising for the Barton Community College softball team as it took game one of the doubleheader 10-2 over Dodge City Community College in Dodge City.  Problem for the Cougars there was a second game to be played and suffered a 15-3 beating by the Conquistadors.  With the split Barton moves to 6-4 on season while Dodge City stands at 7-8.  Barton returns to the diamond on Saturday as they host Garden City Community College for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Cougar Field.

Game One
The Cougars scored three in the first inning with two-outs behind Emilia Davies single and Darby Grizzard two RBI double.

After Dodge City scored one in the home half of the second, the Cougars went long ball to balloon the lead to six.  Morgan Rohrbouck and Davies went back-to-back then Shelby Plank delivered a two-run shot to score Grizzard to give Barton a 7-1 lead after the third.

Dodge added one in the fourth to cut the lead to five where it would stand until the seventh inning.   Rohrbouck, a freshman from Loveland, Colorado, connected on her second homerun of the game scoring Great Bend native Jordan Haney.  Plank completed the Barton scoring driving home Grizzard on an RBI double.

Alex Dunlavy picked up the win for Barton improving to 4-0 on the season in five appearances.

Game Two
Game two was all Dodge City as the Conquistadors scored four in the second then plated ten in the third and another in the fourth to build a 15-0 lead.

Haney, who took the loss on the mound to drop her record to 2-2 on the season, drove in all three runs for Barton in the fifth inning launching her first homerun as a Cougar to drive in Grizzard and Caitlyn Larson.

Freshman Rohrbouck becomes first Barton softball player named Jayhawk Conference player of the week

Morgan Rohrbouck, 2012-13 Barton softballBarton Community College softball player Morgan Rohrbouck has been named the KJCCC Verizon Wireless Player of the Week and becomes the first Cougar to ever earn the award.  The freshman from Loveland, Colorado, was solid at the plate and in the field helping the 3-1 Cougars get off to their best start to a season since 2009.  Batting .500 for the week including two home runs and seven runs batted in, Rohrbouck was also solid defensively at her third base position with a .952 fielding percentage in twenty-one opportunities.  In her season debut and behind in the count 0-2, Rohrbouck worked the count to full before driving the two-out solo blast over the left center fence.  In the first inning of game one this past Sunday, again Rohrbouck was down in the count before driving a three-run shot to right center giving the Cougars an early three-run lead. 

In her first appearance after receiving the honor, Rohrbouck went 5-for-9 Tuesday against Pratt Community College driving home six runs and scoring three runs.  In her first at-bat of the doubleheader Rohrbouck drove a two-out two-run homerun over the left field fence giving the Cougars an early 2-0 lead.  It was the third homerun of the season for Rohrbouck and the third time she delivered the shot with two outs in the inning.  Getting another RBI on a first inning single in the second game, Rohrbouck later tripled with two outs in the fourth driving in another two runs.  Rohrbouck would end her day on a fielder’s choice RBI in the seventh inning.

Barton returns to the diamond on Saturday as they head to Hesston College for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Cougars’ two-out rallies on short end of doubleheader sweep by Pratt

For the first five innings on Tuesday the Barton Community College softball team looked well on its way to winning its fourth game of the year.  Enter a defensive disastrous sixth inning coupled with the Pratt Community College bats heating up, and what was a 5-0 Barton lead quickly diminished to a two-run deficit as the Cougars fell 7-5 in game one of the doubleheader.  Scoring ten of their fifteen runs with two outs in the doubleheader, Barton could never seize the momentum in game two as Pratt outscored and held off the Cougars 14-10.  With the two losses, Barton drops to 3-3 on season while Pratt improves to 4-4.  Barton returns to the diamond on Saturday as they head to Hesston College for a doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.

Game One
The Cougars held a 5-0 lead through five innings of play with all five runs coming in two-out situations. Conference player of the week Morgan Rohrbouck got the Cougars started with her third homerun of the season scoring Caitlyn Larson in the bottom of the first giving the Cougars an early 2-0 lead.  Scoreless into the fourth, freshman Darian Hudson delivered a two-out RBI double scoring Taylor Chrisco to increase Barton’s lead to three.  Barton’s final runs came out off the bat of Great Bend native Jordan Haney as she laced a two-out double down the left field line scoring Darby Grizzard and Rohrbouck.

Pratt scored all seven or their runs in the sixth inning getting five hits aided by the disastrous defensive play by the Cougars.  In the half inning the Cougar fielders committed three errors and two passed balls while the combination of three pitchers threw three wild pitches.

Game Two
As in game one, the Cougars jumped out to an early 2-0 lead getting two-out RBI singles from Rohrbouck and Emilia Davies.  

Pratt answered the Cougars getting three runs in the second and five in the third as again the Barton defense committed three errors while the Beaver offense pounded out seven hits.

Haney’s fielder’s choice pushed across the first of three runs with Rohrbouck following with a two RBI triple to right center as Barton battled back in the home half of the fourth to cut the deficit to 8-5. 

With Pratt increasing the lead out to 10-5, Barton scored two in the sixth as Davies delivered a two-out single up the middle to score Caitlyn Larson and Haney as the Cougars were within striking distance headed to the seventh trailing 10-7.

Getting a leadoff single from Rachel Shoonmaker followed by a sacrifice by Stephanie Seewer, the top of the lineup delivered the Pratt knock out punches as back-to-back singles from leadoff Kelsie Lundgren and Annette Thomas-Daw gave Pratt a 12-5 lead.   Cleanup batter Samantha Garrison drove the final nail in the coffin with a left field line drive just carrying over the fence to give Pratt a 14-7 lead.

The Cougars wouldn’t go away quietly in the bottom of the inning as the Cougars loaded the bases behind singles from Katelyn Brockman and Hudson followed by Larson reaching on a fielding error.  Haney then delivered a single to right field scoring Brockman and Hudson. After a Rohrbouck fielder’s choice scored Larson and a Grizzard walk, Pratt pitcher Elizabeth Ortega was able to induce a Davies ground out to end the game. 

Cougar run-rules McCook in two-game sweep

The book maybe still out on the 2013 version of the Barton Community College softball team but if Sunday was any indication of the how much these Cougars have improved, the season looks promising.  the Cougars won both games at Cougar Field over McCook Community College in five-run mercy rule fashion winning game one 10-2 and taking the second 13-5.  After splitting its first two game of the season Wednesday against a Bethany College junior varsity squad consisting of multiple varsity players, the Cougars improve to 3-1 on the early season.  Barton returns to Cougar Field on Tuesday for a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader versus Pratt Community College. 

Freshman Morgan Rohrbouck led the Cougars’ with a homerun and six RBI, five coming in game one.  Barton pounded out twenty-nine hits in the doubleheader with four players going 4-for-7 in the series. Alex Dunlavy picked up her second win of the season pitching five innings giving up five hits and two runs while striking out one with no walks.  Game two pitcher Jordan Haney picked up her first victory as a Cougar pitching five innings with six walks, allowing five runs with four of them earned, while striking out two and giving up two walks.

Cougars open 2013 season with dramatic seventh inning win, drop game two for split against Bethany College JV

The Barton Community College softball team opened the 2013 season Wednesday at Cougar Fields by splitting a pair of games against the junior varsity squad from Bethany College.  Coming from behind to win game one 5-4, the Cougars left too many opportunites in game two in losing 5-0.   Barton returns to the Cougar Field diamond at 1:00 p.m. Sunday in doubleheader action versus McCook Community College.
