Barton Community College's Sports Medicine Department directs the health care delivery system used for all Cougar student-athletes. Two nationally certified and Kansas licensed athletic trainers, along with a staff of student athletic trainers, provides athletic training services to each Cougar team.
The art and science of sports medicine refers to the application of scientific and medical aspects indicated for the physically active. The practice of sports medicine includes Sports medicine (the prevention, recognition, evaluation, management, and rehabilitation of injuries sustained from physical activity); Research (the discovery of new or improved techniques -- physical, biochemical, biomechanical, and behavioral); and Enhancement of participation performance (using nutrition, conditioning, biofeedback, psychology, massage, etc. to improve the capacity for improved performance.).
Athletic trainers are highly skilled health care professionals who work under the supervision of physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients in any physical setting. This encompasses the prevention, recognition, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations, and disabilities. Athletic trainers are not to be confused with personal fitness trainers.
Our mission is to provide quality sports medicine services by using current and scientifically sound athletic training skills and services to each of Barton’s student-athletes, regardless of the sport or personal team standing; and to provide appropriate educational and social opportunities and athletic training experiences for the student pursuing a career in athletic training or other field of interest.
We will be a premier Sports Medicine Department recognized for its athletic training staff, athletic training facilities, student-athlete health care services, and academically successful student athletic trainers.
