Lady Cougar Tennis dominates to open the season 2-0

The Barton Community College women’s tennis team posted its second victory of the season defeating Hesston College 8-1 Wednesday.  Held at Club 1 Fitness Center in Great Bend, the Lady Cougars won all three doubles matches and five of six singles matches.  Barton will compete next on March 6 as they travel to Arkansas City to take on Cowley College.  Schedule meet time is 10:00 a.m.

Barton was dominant in the doubles matches winning by a combined 24-6 score as the Lady Cougars No. 1 duo of Karina Ono and Michelle Miller won 8-0.  The No. 2 duo of Darrien Beckwith and Aspen McCann  and the No. 3 duo of Jaime Christiansen and Gentry McLeland each won by identical 8-3 scores.

“All of the doubles teams remain unbeaten,” said Head Coach Lyle Stickney. “Karina continues to dominate her singles opponents as she has not lost a game in either of her two matches this season.”

With Ono winning the No. 1 singles by identical 6-0 scores, Miller nearly matched the feat in the No. 2 singles winning 6-0, 6-1.  Beckwith captured the No. 3 singles winning 6-0, 6-4, while fellow freshman Aspen McCann survived a tougher No. 4 singles contest winning 6-4, 6-2.  Christiansen won her No. 5 singles match 7-5, 6-0 while freshman McLeland battled back after dropping the first set 0-6 to fall 6-7 (7) in the second set of the No. 6 singles match.

“It’s great to get back on the courts,” said Stickney. “I had some concerns going into this meet as we hadn’t practiced for nearly a week due to the school cancelations, but the ladies were able to perform without any real sign of court rust. We’ll see how the team responds next week when we move outdoors and face last year’s Region VI Champions Cowley College”

Cougar Tennis teams split spring season opener versus Bethany

The Barton Community College tennis teams opened up the spring season this past Sunday getting a split against Bethany College.  Held at Club 1 Fitness Center in Great Bend, the Lady Cougars defeated Bethany 5-4 while the NAIA No. 10 ranked men’s team defeated the Cougar men 6-1.  Both teams will have a break from competition for a couple weeks before a busy last week in February.   The Lady Cougars will take on Hesston College on February 22nd while the Cougar men will compete against Hesston on February 25.  Both matches will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the Club 1 Fitness Center in Great Bend.

Women’s Highlights
In an exciting dual of momentum swings as the Lady Cougars led 4-0 over the Lady Swedes then dropped three straight singles matches to draw Bethany to within one.  Barton earned a split in the last two singles matches to win the match 5-4.

“While it’s a great start to the season with a win, we certainly realize that we have a few issues to address,” said Head Coach Lyle Stickney. “Several of our ladies delivered perfunctory singles performances that displayed little of the effort for which they are known.  That being said, we did win the meet after all and all of the team members contributed to that so I can’t be overly critical, a lot of very good things also occurred on the court today.”

Barton was strong in the doubles winning all three matches by a combined 24-11 score.  Freshman Karina Ono and sophomore Michelle Miller won the No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-2.  The freshman duo of Darrien Beckwith and Aspen McCann were almost as impressive in their 8-4 victory in the No. 2 doubles.  Sophomore Jaime Christiansen and freshman Gentry McLeland teamed up to capture the No. 3 doubles at 8-5.

After Ono won the No. 1 singles by a resounding 8-0 score, Bethany won the next three singles matches over Miller, Beckwith, and McCann.  With the Nos. 5 and 6 matches deciding the dual score, Christiansen clinched the win with an 8-3 victory.

“The momentum swing after sweeping the doubles and getting the No. 1 singles win, then dropping the next three singles matches was crazy,” said Head Coach Lyle Stickney. “Jaime (Christiansen) came up big for us again as her match won us the meet.”

Men’s Highlights
The Cougars faced one of the best teams in the NAIA in falling to Bethany but did manage to get the No. 1 singles win against the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s No. 15 ranked player.

In a thrilling three-set match, Barton freshman Samuel Araujo defeated Alex Sandri in a come-from-behind 3-6, 6-4, 10-7 victory to earn Barton’s lone win on the day.

“I knew we’d have our hands full today as Bethany has a very talented team with a ton of depth,” said Stickney. “We have a lot of things to work on but luckily it’s only early February so we have a lot of time to improve.
