Barton opens outdoor track season at Cowley

The Barton Community College track and field team opened the 2011 outdoor season at Arkansas City this past weekend at the Cowley Tiger Invitational. The men won 10 events during the meet while the women captured five. For the men Carmetrick Ross and Frank Afriyie were both double winners in the field. The Cougar men also won five events on the track including an impressive 1-2-3 finish in the 100m. Sametra Kelly was a double winner in the field for the women. Barton will split the squad this weekend, heading to the Texas Relays and the Emporia State Relays.

Highlights - MEN
On the track the Cougars were very impressive in the sprints – especially the 100m. With a 2.8 wind (2.0 is legal wind) the Cougars had 3 runners finish in 10.12 or better. Everett Walker – fresh off his sprint double at the NJCAA Indoor meet – ran a 10.05 to win the event. He was followed by teammates Jeremy Hardy in 10.08 and Oliver Bradwell in 10.12 as the Cougars went 1-2-3. Bradwell gave Barton a team sprint double with a win in the 200m in 21.95. Teammates Alonzo Allen and Ren Edwards were 6th and 7th in the race.

 

Allen and Edwards were 2nd and 4th in the 400m with Allen running a 48.91 and Edwards a 49.72. Johnte Thompson was 5th in 50.39. The Cougar men also won the 4x100m relay in easy fashion with a 39.83. Also on the track Barton won both hurdle races with Aleec Harris winning the 110m hurdles in 13.97 and Andre Peart capturing the 400m hurdles in 53.18.

 

The Cougars were just as impressive in the field with Ross and Afriyie both winning two events. Ross captured the long jump and triple jump for the Cougars while Afriyie won the discus and hammer throw. The Cougars also won the shot put.

 

Ross led a trio of jumpers who placed in both events. Ross won the long jump at 25-4.5 with Chris Toombs coming in 5th (23-10.25) and Bradley Hines 6th (23-7.25). The trio went 1-3-4 in the triple jump. Ross won at 48-11.5 with Hines taking 3rd (46-7.5) and Toombs 4th (44-0).

 

In the throwing events Barton was dominate with 3 wins. Afriyie led a 1-2-3 finish in the discus with a 171-10 toss. Matt Marcoccia was 2nd at 159-10 and Charith Kapukotuwa 3rd at 158-11. Afriyie also won the hammer with a heave of 158-6 with Marcoccia placing 4th with a throw of 149-4. Marcoccia won the shot put for Barton at 52-2 with Kapukotuwa 4th at 46-8.75.  

Highlights - WOMEN
The Cougars won 4 of their 5 events in the field with Aarian Tipton earning the lone 1st place finish on the track. Tipton won the 100m in 11.96. Melissa Groce was 2nd in the 400m hurdles. The Cougars 4x100m relay team placed as well.

 

Kelly won both the long jump and triple jump for Barton. She and teammate Dana Gates teamed up for a 1-2 finish in the long jump with Kelly winning with a jump of 19-7.5 and Gates 2nd at 17-5.5 Kelly jumped 38-4.25 to win the triple jump.

 

Barton won two of the four throwing events with Janee Mickens placing in 3 of the events. Mickens won the shot put at 47-5.75 and took 4th in the discus with a toss of 124-9. She was 8th in the javelin at 117-3 but the entire field was well behind the effort of Barton’s Marcela Solano. Solano won the hammer with a throw of 178-7 – more than 30 feet ahead of 2nd place. Brittiany Hughes took 2nd in the javelin for Barton with a throw of 125-8.
