Barton men win Region VI Indoor title

The Barton Community College men’s track and field team captured the 2011 Region VI Indoor championship again, earning the title by 24 points over 2nd place Butler this past weekend at Ahearn Field House in Manhattan. The Cougars won the event with 143 points with Butler 2nd at 119 and Cowley 3rd at 118. No other team scored more than 77.5 points during the meet. The Cougars will look to defend their 2010 NJCAA Indoor Title in a couple of weeks when they travel to Lubbock, Texas March 4-5 for the 2011 version of the meet.  

Highlights
The Cougars won 6 events during the day with Everett Walker earning a pair of gold medals in sprints for Barton. Walker won the 60m in 6.74 then doubled up in the 200m later in the day with a gold-medal effort of 21.5. Barton went 1-2-4 the 200m with Jeremy Hardy (21.74) and Markquis Frazier (22.03) following Walker across the finish line.

 

The Cougars also scored wins on the track in the 600m and the 60m hurdles. Tayron Reyes won the 600m with a time of 1:20.26. He also finished 5th in the 1000m. Aleec Harris won the 60m hurdles for the Cougars in 7.89. LeCarl Hayes took 2nd in the 800m.

 

The Cougars won a pair of events in the field, capturing the shot put and weight throw. Matt Marcocci won the shot put with an effort of 53-4.5 while Frank Afriyie won the weight throw with a toss of 57-2.75. Marcocci also placed in the weight throw, taking 5th.  

Barton scored well in a couple of jumping events placing all 3 jumpers in both the long jump and triple jump. Carmetrick Ross led a trio of placers in the long jump with a 3rd place jump of 23-4. Bradley Hines did likewise in the triple jump with a bronze medal jump of 48-10.75.
