The Barton Community College track and field teams will wrap up its 2011-12 season this week as they travel to Levelland, Texas, to participate in the NJCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field National Championship to be held May 15-17. The Cougars will send eleven men and seven women to compete in twenty three events. Highlighting the men is freshman Demetrius Lindo who has the nations’ top time in the 110m Hurdles at 13.72. Sophomore Marcela Solano highlights the women’s team with the top distance in the Hammer Throw at 186’1”. Earlier in the spring the Cougar men finished second while the women finished third in the NJCAA Indoor National Championships.
Men
In addition to Lindo being the favorite in the 110m Hurdles, the Cougars will be competing in nine other events in which it has a top ten time or distance. Sophomore Akeem Haynes, who was voted by Barton coaches and staff as the 2011-12 most inspirational athlete, leads the sprints in having the nation’s second fastest time in the 100m at 10.23 and his 20.61 time is the third best in the 200m.
Freshman Aliaksandr Linnik will compete in three events with his sixth best time of 20.73 in the 200m and his twelfth place ranking in both the 100m at 10.46 and 400m in a time of 47.15. After capturing the indoor national title, sophomore Tayron Reyes will also be one to watch as his 1:50.05 is the fifth best outdoor time in the 800m.
The Barton men are expected to challenge for the top spot in the 4X100m relay as its 40.04 time is second best in the nation. The Cougars will also be competing in the 4X400m relay with its eleventh nation’s best time of 3:12.49.
In the field events sophomores Jharyl Bowry and Tyler Rathke, along with freshman Tony Green, give the Cougars the best shot of bringing home gold as each has a top five distance in the nation. Bowry, who won the indoor national title, enters the competition with the second best distance in the long jump at 25’4.75”. Green, who finished second in the national indoor long jump, will compete in the outdoor triple jump with his fifth seeded distance of 49’7.25”.
With his discus throw of 167’1”, Rathke will be the fourth seed while also competing in the hammer throw as his 168’11” mark is tenth best in the nation.
Women
Solano and fellow sophomore Janee Mickens lead the Lady Cougar air attack in the throws. Besides Solano’s top throw in the hammer, Mickens has qualified in three throwing events. Mickens’ 48’0.5” is the nation’s fourth best throw in the shot put while her 148’1” distance is seventh best in the discus. Mickens will also compete in the hammer throw with Solano as her 147’7” throw places her eleventh.
Barton will have a number of women competing in track events as freshman Kandace Thomas leads the way with a seventh best national time of 11.62 in the 100m, in addition to her fifteenth best time of 24.31 in the 200m. Agata Klimovich and Yehaterina Miroshnikova will also be competing in two events as the freshman duo try to add to their national indoor championships. Klimovich, who won the 400m indoor, has posted the thirteenth best time of 55.69 in the 400m and the sixteenth best in the 100m at 12.05. Miroshnikova, who earned the Barton female athlete of the year award given by coaches and staff, will try to add to her 1-mile indoor championship by competing in both the 800m and 1,500m. Miroshnikova will be seeded fifteenth in the 800m with a time of 2:19.50 and her time of 4:53.20 places her fourteenth in the 1,500m.
