Cougars run winning streak to 7; capture AFP Classic

The Barton Community College volleyball team rolled through the Air Force Prep Classic this past weekend then scooped up another non conference win Monday night in Sterling with a win over the Sterling JV. Those wins have pushed the Cougars’ winning streak to 7 games heading back into Jayhawk West play Wednesday night at home against Colby. The Cougars were a perfect 3-0 in pool play in Colorado Springs, beating West foe Garden City as well as Air Force Prep and North Lake. The 4 teams were then bracketed for single elimination action Saturday with Barton beating Air Force Prep and North Lake for the championship without dropping a single game in the 5 matches. Barton is now 13-4 on the season.

 

Highlights
Friday’s pool play action at Air Force Prep was best 2 of 3 with Barton cruising to a 3-0 mark. The Cougars beat Garden 25-15 25-13 then rolled by Air Force Prep 25-15 25-7. Barton finished the day with a 25-16 25-11 win over North Lake.

 

Tonga Malia paced Barton in the win over Garden with 13 kills while Taylor Arnold had 3 service aces. In the win over Air Force Prep, Raney Okeson led a balanced hitting attack with 8 kills. Kamri Nehls had 6 kills and 3 blocks – 2 solo. Okeson had 5 kills, Juliana Barros 11 assists in the win over North Lake Friday.

 

Barton earned the top seed in the bracket play, which was the best 3 of 5. The Cougars dominated Air Force Prep to opening action 25-7 25-6 25-4. Okeson had 8 kills, Barros 21 assists and 6 service aces for the Cougars. Barton won the championship over North Lake 25-19 25-15 25-16. The 19 points given up in the 1st game of the match was the highest total Barton allowed all weekend. Okeson had 9 kills and no errors on just 18 attempts for Barton hitting while Barros added 24 assists.

 

Barton concluded its stretch of non conference action Monday with a 25-13 25-21 25-17 win at Sterling. Okeson again led Barton with 16 kills and Barros 20 assists. Giselle de Moura had 19 digs and Barros 4 aces as well.  

The Cougars will look to make it back-to-back wins on the Jayhawk West and even its mark at 2-2 in the conference when Colby visits Wednesday. It won’t be easy, however, as Colby brings a 3-1 West record to the Barton Gym and a 15-5 mark overall.
