Barton wraps up season at NJCAA National Tournament

The Barton Community College volleyball team wrapped up its volleyball season at the NJCAA National Tournament Thursday and Friday with losses in its two matches. The Cougars lost the opener to No. 2 seed Western Wyoming in 3 close games then battled to a 5-game match loss to Florida State-Jacksonville in the consolation bracket. The Cougars finish the year with a 26-10 record. Western Nebraska, the 4th seed, won the NJCAA Championship with a 5-game thriller over 3rd seeded San Jacinto. Western Wyoming took 3rd. Top seed and previously unbeaten Miami-Dade was defeated in the quarterfinals by Salt Lake and ended up 6th with another loss North Idaho in the 5th place game.

Highlights
Barton battled Western Wyoming to the end in all 3 games but came up short each time, losing 25-22 25-23 25-20 to the Mustangs. Barton played from behind most of the opening game but always within striking distance. The Cougars were definitely in the game following a 4-0 run to trail by just one at 23-22. But the Mustangs scored the next two points to close out that match. Barton sent much of game two with the lead until the later stages when the match kept finding itself tied. The contest was at 15, 17, 18, 19, 20 and 21 before a quick 2-0 by Western Wyoming gave the Mustangs a 23-21 lead. Barton cut it to 24-23 but was not able to get the match tied. The final game saw Barton fall behind 17-8 following an 8-1 run. The Cougar put together a big run of their own to claw back into the game down just one at 21-20. But four straight Mustang points closed out the game and match.

The Cougars saw their tournament run come to an end in the opening round of the consolation bracket, dropping a thrilling 5-game match to Jacksonville, 26-24 24-26 25-21 17-25 16-14. Barton was in control nearly all of game one and was on the verge of closing out the Stars in the opener up 24-21. But Jacksonville scored the final 5 points of the game for the win. Barton turned the tables in the 2nd game, trailing most of the way including down 22-19. But Barton scored the next 5 points and following a Juliana Barros ace led 24-22. The Cougars held on to even things at 1-all.

Each team used some early runs in game three with Barton taking a 13-7 lead following a 7-0 before the Stars countered with an immediate 8-1 run to take a 15-14 lead. Jacksonville stretched that lead to 18-15 and the closest Barton would come would be at 22-21 before Jacksonville closed out with 4 straight. The Cougars were by no means done though. Trailing 11-9 in the fourth game Barton pounded away for a 12-2 run and a 20-13 lead. The Cougars coasted home from there to force a 5th and deciding game.

Barton fell behind in that 5th game by a 4-0 count and had to battle its way back into the game. The Cougars did so fairly quickly, evening the game at 7-all. But the Cougars continued to play catch up the rest of the way. Down 9-7 the Cougars used a Malia Tonga kill and Raney Okeson block to even it at 9-all. The down by 2 again at 11-9, Tonga had back-to-back kills to tie the game 11-all. On the brink of elimination down 14-12 Barton received a point thanks to a Star serving error then Taylor Arnold’s kill tied the game 14-all. The Stars would finally put the match away with the final two points of the game and match.
