Cougars go 3-1 in Texas with pair of wins over ranked teams; lose to Hutch

The Barton Community College volleyball team rebounded from a loss to start Jayhawk West play with a 3-1 record in Borger, Texas at the Frank Phillips Invitational. The Cougars lost to Panola (Texas) before finishing with wins over Pratt, Casper (Wyom), and Cloud County. The first three games were against ranked foes. The Cougars then lost their 2nd Jayhawk West game at Hutchinson.

Highlights

The Cougars came up short against No. 16 Panola to start the weekend Friday afternoon, losing 14-25, 22-25 25-20 14-25. Barton was led in the contest by Raney Okeson with 9 kills and Tonga Malia with 7. Juliana Barros added 27 assists while Morgan Cooper recorded 22 digs.

 

Barton came back to finish Friday in strong fashion knocking off No. 14 Pratt in 4 games. The Cougars defeated the Beavers 25-15 25-16 20-25 25-22. Barton was again paced by Okeson and Malia with 15 and 10 kills while Barros had 38 assists. Cooper notched 3 service aces and had 18 digs as well. Lindsay Garinger led the Cougars with 4 blocks – all solos.

 

The Cougars made it two straight wins over ranked foes with a 3-game win over No. 18 Casper to start Saturday. Barton rolled to a 25-20 25-16 25-22 win to run its record against ranked teams this year to an even 2-2. The Cougars had 11 kills from both Okeson and Malia while Barros led Barton with 34 assists. Malia also had 3 aces and Cooper 19 digs. Garinger had 4 blocks again – this time 2 solo.

 

Barton finished the weekend with a 4-game win over another Jayhawk West foe in Cloud losing the 1st game before winning the final 3 in a 22-25 25-17 25-23 25-12 win over the Thunderbirds. Barton was led by Malia with 13 kills and Okeson with 10. Barros assisted 34 times with Cooper recording 17 digs and Gabriela Oliveira added 16. Giselle de Moura led Barton with 3 service aces while Okeson added 4 blocks – 3 solo.

 

Prior to the Labor Day Weekend trip to Texas the Cougars lost to Dodge City to start Jayhawk West play, falling to the Conquistadors 23-25 21-25 22-25. Barton also lost to 5-game match at Hutchinson following with Hutch winning 25-22, 20-25, 13-25 25-20 15-5.

 

Barton will host Seward Wednesday night at the Barton Gym as the Cougars still search for that 1st Jayhawk West win. Seward is currently 3-0 in the West and 9-2 overall on the season. The Saints came in at No. 18 in the latest NJCAA poll. First serve is set for 6:30 pm.
