The Barton Community College volleyball team captured an opening round win in the Region VI playoffs in thrilling fashion as Barton won 28-26 26-24 25-23 over Colby Tuesday night at the Barton Gym. The win moved Barton into the double elimination portion of the post season event to play the region’s top seed Pratt. Barton, the 4 seed, is now 23-7 on the season while Pratt is 17-15. The bottom of the bracket will pit 2 Dodge City (26-9) and 3 Seward (20-16). Colby ends its season at 26-15.
Highlights
The Cougars were able to sweep through Colby but not in quick fashion by any means. The 1st two games went overtime while the 3rd ended as close as it could as well as Barton won the 3 games in the match by a total of the minimum 6 points.
The Cougars were led in the match by Malia Tonga with 12 kills in 29 attempts. Raney Okeson added 9 kills and Gabriela Oliveira finished with 7. Juliana Barros led the Cougars with 26 assists and 2 service aces. Morgan Cooper and Oliveira each had 12 digs for Barton while Taylor Arnold led Barton with 3 blocks.
Barton will now head to the campus of Newman University for Region VI double elimination play, taking on the top seed in the 4-team tournament. Barton and Pratt split games this season with both teams winning on its home court. Against the bottom of the bracket, Barton split games with Seward and was swept by Dodge. The losers of the opening matches will play in an elimination contest Friday night with the winner facing off Saturday afternoon at 3. The title match is set for 11 am Sunday with a 2nd match to follow if needed.
