FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Release by Mike Marzolf
The Barton Community College volleyball team matched its longest winning streak in a couple of years with a Jayhawk West win over Garden City Wednesday night at the Barton Gym. The Cougars made it 9 straight with a 25-5 25-12 25-18 win over the Broncbusters. The Cougars started last season off with 9 straight wins. Barton has won 3 straight West games in that streak and have put themselves back in the West race in the process after an 0-2 start. Barton is 3-2 in the West and 15-4 overall. Garden City fell to 0-7 and 2-17. Barton’s next two games could put them on top of the West as Cougars have road games at Dodge City Friday and Pratt Monday. Those are the only two teams with just 1 loss in the West.
Highlights
Barton has very little trouble winning its 3rd straight Jayhawk West contest and 9th overall. Malia Tonga led Barton with 14 kills. Juliana Barros had 23 assists and 4 services aces to pace the Cougars. Giselle de Moura led Barton with 9 digs followed by Morgan Cooper with 8.
The Cougars will travel to Dodge Friday to take on the Conquistadors who sit tied atop the West with a 5-1 record. Dodge City beat the Cougars in the 1st meeting in Great Bend earlier this year. The Cougars will then go to Pratt Monday to face the currently 5-1 Beavers. It will be the 1st meeting between the team in the West. Pratt will come to Great Bend later this year. In what has been one of the most wide-open West races in years, the rest of the West all has 3 or more losses including Seward (4-3) Colby (4-3) and Hutch (3-3) all just one game back of the Cougars in the loss column.
